catagory write offs
Discussion
I bought an Astra via a 'friend' thinking it was a Cat D write off with minimal damage. a body repair shop, on checking it, thinks there is frame damage amongst other stuff going on and I am trying to find out what Category write off it really was but the DVLA say they cannot tell me and my insurance company (for my other car as the Astra is uninsured at present)tell me I need to get this info from the Insurance Company who wrote it off. I don't have this information and have no way of finding out as it was brought via a friend via 'a man' from Manchester. I feel like a fool but I trusted this guy and am left with a car I am too scared to drive (£6.5k worth. Am getting an indpendent garage to check it over again next week. Any advice re. finding out the category at least ????
Shouldnt said 'friend' have documentation?
if its a cat c it needs a VIC check or something, unsure if this is the same for a d.
I suppose last choice, you could text the reg to the company that do online checks, but im unsure if it tells you waht cat write off the car would be, or if it would just tell you its been written off.

Catagory D - minor bodywork damage. Bumpers broken, bad dents etc. Is allowed back on the road.
Catagory C - major damage, not economical to repair, with structual damage. Is allowed back on the road, may need checking over by somebody. (No doubt someone else will correct this if not...)
Catagory B - Spare parts only, not allowed back on road.
Catagory A - must be crushed, not allowed to be broken for spares.
Catagory F - Fire damage.
Catagory X - Unclassified. (?)

have been told that it is a Cat C or D but this 'ex-friend' has fed me so much rubbish. I have the Registration Doc (V5C) in my name but no log book - or is this the same thing. See I know nothing really and he is no longer in the picture. He told me there was no log book ????
The V5 and the logbook are the same document.gaynorc said:

Log book is the V5.
By the description, it sounds like a Cat C, at worse a B.
Any chance of a fuller list?

Cat D cars are cars that could have been repaired for less than their value
Cat C cars are cars that are beyond economical repair.
What this means is that low value cars can be on a Cat C for very minor damage ie: scratches, cracked bumper etc where as higher value stuff could be really badly bent and on a cat D. It depends on the cost of replacement parts and time required for the repair. In many cases the car is economical to repair if second hand or pattern parts are used. Sometimes the car could be driven with no repair.
Cat D cars require no checks and can be used on the road as long as they are safe, an MOT from prior to the claim will still cover the vehicle.
Cat C cars require a VOSA check to confirm the cars identity before the DVLA will release a V5 for it they also need to be MOT'd etc.
There is an engineering company somewhere )only 1 company in the UK) that is authorised to change the record of cat c and d to inspected on the register following their assesment which confirms that the car has been repaired to pre accident or better condition.

If it's an Astra VXR I know of at least one Cat B that's back on the road.....
I dont know how these Cat B cars are getting back on the road, it's not supposed to happen. There's a guy on ebay breaking a boxster thats a cat b that he had on the road, found out the history then broke the car. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-Boxster-986-Face...Do you know how they got the VXR back on the road?
then I have the correct documentation but being ultra cautious, got it checked anyway, only to be told there could be problems - so confusing. there is nothing on there stating anything about any sort of write off. should it be listed on the V5 form. will try the my text thing (see no technical words)
and it's an Astra Life 1.6. looks and drives beautifully but now too worried to use it. I have no other info but saw a photo of the damage - crunched ??? passenger front wing. airbags went off when loaded on tow truck, is that possible or does it sound like an excuse for a more serious accident
