You know, the real nig nig nig, heavy plant machinery sounding diesels.

Say you have £800-1500 to spend on such a vehicle for daily duties and you want it to be the loudest, most obnoxious sound you can get but remain 100% standard and legal?

For that money you could get 2 or 3 Citroen ZX diesels. The XUD9 is a proper old tractor engine smile

Montego estate is pretty obnoxious.

Actually, the Pug 106 1.5d is pretty bad too. At a previous workplace, the farmer who rented a nearby field used to bring the feed to his cows on his tractor. When my workmate who owned a 106 drove down the driveway to our factory which was next to the field, the cows followed his car.

Heard an old Polo SDI go up the road the other day and it sounded like a piece of farm machinery!

I have to admit I'm not sure how a racist diesel engine would go down...

On a serious note, a BMW 3/525 td/s? They sound pretty agricultural at idle and up to about 3000 rpm.

ETA: Actually my old Passat TDI sounded extremely agricultural, weirdly part of the appeal actually, and had a lovely turbo whistle as well. That or the turbo was broken...

Older peugeot diesels have a unique sound to them. They sound VERY utilitarian.

See if you can find an old 2.3 Sierra. I remember a next door neighbour having one when I was young and it woke me up every morning. Probably going back more than 20 years ago now.

Not where I live, but the buggers who poured glue over my car the other day while I was at work. Don't think I'll park a nice car there any longer and instead turn up at 5am and sit and wait for an hour with the engine running in a beat up, scruffy looking diesel banger. Each and every weekday morning and maybe the odd Sunday too!

Some sort of mid 1990s Renault, way louder than the PUG XUD engine of the same period.

1.9D N/A 306 - decat downpipe job done hehe

EDIT: Didn't see the "standard" requirement - sorry!

It might not be the out and out loudest but it is pretty loud and offensive!

What about the petrol route - cheap BMW E34 V8 with a severe exhaust malfunction and a bit of a misfire?

I pass a stroen ZX diesel every morning on my walk to the DLR - I can vouch for its noise + to add insult to injury every morning she pips the horn to say goodbye to her husband as well.

the backbox fell (completely) off my old mondeo diesel, and it didn't sound any different so I didn't bother replacing it. did 12,000 miles till it was scrapped at MOT time

good call, I had one, truly horrific piece of engineering....whole car rattled from the roughness of the engine....and although it says "turbo" the performance will make you believe its not working!

Your not going to hear the engine all your going to hear is the sound of wind rushing past the car as you do warp 7 with all them torque's and awesome in gear acceleration.
