New car ordered - Dealer wants me to pay before quarter end
Discussion
When my new VW was late for delivery last summer, they allowed me to keep my previous (VW financed) car beyond its normal finance term until the new car was ready. That also meant the dealer paying for a new windscreen and MOT for the old car, so it became effectively a free courtesy car (albeit on my insurance). They eventually threw in a 50 quid accessories voucher as way of apology.
TBH it didn't bother me that much, apart from the inconvenience of not knowing when the new car would turn up. In fact the delay meant I could get the new car registered 01.09.11, which gave it the newer reg plate, so it may even have done me a small favour! However all this was concerning a 2 month delay so not just a week or two as per the OP.

Was offered a full tank of petrol to pay for a bmw about 3pm on 30th June last year prior to pickup on 1st July. Would have gone for it but could not do transaction over phone due to limits on my bank account. Paid next day on debit card.
Salesman said it was just to get their commission that bit earlier.

Don't do anything, just wait for your car, inspect it properly, pay and drive off. Why make life complicated for no meaningful benefit to you and youre carrying all the risk with little reward. Buying a new car can be deemed an irrational purchase but this part is where you need to make a completely rational decision.

Im not going to be cheeky and ask what you paid but whats the rrp on that spec?
Just under £31,000 all in before discount.Wheelrepairit said:
Perhaps as its a BMW you could ask for the "working indicators" optional extra.
Must be an expensive extra as you don't see many with it fitted.
Laugh a minute with you isn't it?Must be an expensive extra as you don't see many with it fitted.

Don't understand some people on here implying the op is greedy or a chancer.
BMW failed to meet the agreed delivery date, they also want the op to start paying finance on a motor he hasn't even got! fk em get everything you can out of them what's the worst they can do say no?
And when he pays his money, what to stop them slipping again.. etc..BMW failed to meet the agreed delivery date, they also want the op to start paying finance on a motor he hasn't even got! fk em get everything you can out of them what's the worst they can do say no?
Get a couple of track days, these cost the company nothing really.
A little irrelevant now as the OP has made his decision (the right one in my book) but what "figures" are the dealership trying to influence here by asking for earlier payment?
If it was a dealer performance v. target bonus from BMW then surely it would be based on registration of the new vehicle and so registering it before month end would suffice. The dealer could stand this from cashflow for a few days surely?
On the other hand is this an individual salesman chasing his personal target which could be registration or profit based, the latter requiring payment to be made obviously.
There is another possibility - the dealership is up against it re cashflow and is looking to raise money in the short term by pulling forward payment for as yet undelivered vehicles and this would worry me in the OP's shoes.
Based on the questions above I'd stick by the OP's decision too and await seeing the vehicle in its delivery state at handover.

I've not read the whole thread but all I can say is the dealer would fail their audit if BMW found out. Also I'm not sure how this work because I think I know what he problem is, there is an issue at the port of exit over the other side of the water and hundreds of cars are "stuck" delivery dates keep on slipping. The car also has to be "consigned" which basically means in the country for it to be registered, so not sure how they're going to overcome this...good luck!

It's already coming with a full tank of fuel and I paid for 5 years service inclusive.
I just got an email from the dealer basically saying take the courtesy car or nothing.
After also being royally pissed about by my travel agent today resulted in a pretty snotty email about it basically saying I'll leave it, thanks.
Good for you OP. The risk you would have borne would not have been worth the gesture from BMW. I just got an email from the dealer basically saying take the courtesy car or nothing.

Some of the advice on this thread is comical, some naive, and some downright bizarre......

Do you know this for sure? My M3 was sent to port on 21 March since when it has been doing a v good Houdini impression, dealer is saying they have no idea etc etc I know it is now totally irrelevant seeing as decision has been made but am I not the only one who would have thought, ok, not too much bother paying early and having the courtesy car, if it makes them happy they'll be more likely to be helpful in the future? I try and stay on good terms with all my car dealers as you never know what will happen in the future that they might be able to help you out with.
