Are remaps worth it?

I go from an enforced company car, to cash for car shortly and the scheme is somewhat less than generous, imposing a strict 4 year age limit on the car.

I don't want to put loads of my own money into chugging around for work but don't want to chug around too slowly.

I was wondering if a remap, or tuning box can help out. Would people expect them to give a horrible slow 1.6D the relative performance of a 2 litre but for less than buying/leasing the highr output car?

How do they affect insurance?

Value for money would depend on the cars and possible gains i suppose, although i thought most maps are to work with mods uch as induction and exhausts and cams.

As for insurance, it will need to be declared or if you had an accident they would void your insurance / charge you extra. It may also be illegal? Not 100% sure on this, as you still have 3rd party (EU Law)

I've had a couple of cars remapped and they made a significant difference in each one. If you've got a spare £200-£500 (depending who you use) then go for it.

Insurance wise the difference was negligible, but that could just be my insurer - might be worth ringing yours and finding out.

I'm not sure why people buy cars and plan to remap them before they've lived with it standard for a while.

You will notice a difference but unless you buy something that has a lot of potential then the differences aren't really night and day like some people claim them to be on most 1.6 diesels.

Yes.

My old mans 2.0d X3 was remapped. Beforehand the car was very dangerous as it was so slow pulling out from junctions.

rofl It's 183hp out of the box, how can it be too slow that it's dangerous?

I find it impossible to believe that a 2.0d X3 that is able hit 60 in around 10 seconds could be dangerously slow. That is as quick as a lot of cars and quicker than a lot of them.

I suggest your old man was st driver or fell for some kind of hyperbolic bullst about diesels.

The first ones were 150bhp, everyone knows that safe power doesn't start until 175.

And there's me been driving a 70bhp corsa that takes a whole 12 seconds to get to 60, and feeling safe! :O It's a wonder I'm still alive!!

Yes, true. I crash my 115hp Passat on every junction.

Thanks for the replies.

It's all speculative at the moment. I've been driving around in a 1.6 diesel focus as a short term lease and know that I can't do that for the next 90k miles. Too slow.

The differences you will get will vary hugely depending on what you are going to have long term. The 1.6d focus in the MK2 came in two power levels from the factory the 90bhp one feels sluggish next to the 110bhp one that was good enough to keep most people out of the 2.0d.

He already said it was 150bhp, I was the one who said 180bhp. It's still not dangerously slow though is it.
