Just wondering who else is suffering with narrow driveways/garages.?

Looking at moving house, and many houses with side acess seem to have the same restriction and wanting a garage this becomes an issue !

Current situation is drive past side of house into a carport which then opens out and have lots of room then. But driving past house is about 2.3m width , bricks one side concrete posts the other hence not very forgiving ! Number of cars to go down there, all around 1.9m width.

As a mobile car valeter I see a lot of different driveways, And I've seen some shockers!

Some I just about squeeze my Berlingo van through to find a 6ft wide supercar on the other side?!
Other meanwhile, are 10ft across at the entrance and covered in marks where they've been scraped everyday!

I recently started renting a garage, I have about 1.5" clearance on each mirror when going through the doorway, luckily I have electronic folding mirrors which makes it a bit easier. Considering I only drive a Fiesta, it really brings the point home that cars are massive now.

Thats an extention though I imagine...

The house we used to live in had an original driveway down the side of the house about 5ft wide... Pretty useless for any modern, and probably, classic car. Funny thing was that behind the house was the foundations for an original garage (much like your picture)... The previous owner obviously thought it was pointless too...

An old trick is to hang lengths of rope from the ceiling almost to the floor. These mark the furthest you want to go in that direction.

For example you hang a length an inch from the back wall and drive slowly in. When the car touches the rope it twitches and you stop parked an inch from the wall. Other ropes to the side keep you from touching the side walls. Hanging little bells like a budgerigar wears on the rope helps in the dark, but if you have a properly loud car is useless.

Down a side access you might need to construct an archway to hang the ropes from.

I suppose a modern alternative would be to site small laser lights on the ground to mark the limits you mustn’t pass. The laser would shine straight up until the car went over them and cut the beam.

Again driving into the garage, the laser dot is on the ceiling and you can see the beam. When the car is too close the dot and beam disappear.

The trick is to keep an eye on several ropes or beams simultaneously. I suppose that with a laser it would be easy to rig a light sensor on the roof aligned with the beam. When the car cuts the beam it sounds an audible alarm.

Our work car park has this turning, which can only be described as evil. The remains of many a paintjob can clearly be seen

True. Just abut get my bike down there (honda blackbird). I have to either push it in backwards, or ride in forwards and swivel it through 360 on the centre stand. Not ideal but you do what you have to!!

Loving the vid of the old chap with strips of sponge in his garage, bet that gives an interesting paint finish! You can just see the bits of carpet I've attached to the fence for similar purposes.

Yep that is a proper narrow drive !!!

The diablo looks a 'snug' fit too, I guess without scissor doors no chance of getting out either.

Like the laser dot guiding idea and the dropped ropes, any more ideas like this ? I did wonder about using a line of 45degree fence posts fixed on the floor so you would feel when your going of course, bit like a thing called containment kerbs - like you see in public places, to stop people mowing down pedestrians if you fall asleep....

WTF? What do you live in? Yoda's house or something - how can that tiny little car be so squashed in?

Isn't that one of those vinyl print things that you can put on the garage door, that is detailed enough to make it look like the door is open and something's inside?
