Just wondering what the etiquette is for the above, I.e on country lanes or A roads etc. I tend to but I guess I don't have to...

Always.

If on a single track road I meet a car that has to reverse to allow me to pass then I switch to side-lights so as not to dazzle them.

It's the little things that make the world a better place biggrin

As far as high beams are concerned I treat all road users the same: If I think I may dazzle them, I dip the headlamps.

With regard to the single lane reversing and putting side lights on, I don't think I'd go that far. I'd probably be more inclined to start aggressively flashing my full beams whilst leaning on the horn to let them know I've taken the decision not to give way.

Sure, if I spot them I do. Can be hard to spot though if they have no torch etc and are wearing dark clothes.

There seems to be a trend round my way for cyclists to have ridiculous bright lights and dazzle motorists!

@Revol there's the definitive answer then. I must be honest, I wasn't aware of my obligation to pedestrians etc too. So their frantic hand gestures as I pass weren't them waving me through after all :/

Always. Though cyclists should be on the same side of the road as me.

I always dip them for cyclists and pedestrians, mainly because I've been on the receiving end too many times.

Unless you're cycling with uber powerful nightsuns your pupils will be fully dilated, having someone then smack you in the face with full beam hids is unpleasant to say the least.

Yep me too. Its surprising the number of morons who don't though. I'll regularly be walking the dogs at night, torch on low just so i can be seen and cars will approach with full beam blinding me, I put a hand up to shield my eyes and usually they then get the message and dip. If not a quick selection of high power setting on the 2000 lumen torch and it directed at them tends to make them dip. I honestly think some people are to stupid to realise that full beam is blinding to anything oncoming.

@E38Ross Unless they're travelling in the opposite direction and blinding you with aforementioned strobing LED lights.

I've noticed this too, I don't think it used to be much of a problem but modern lights seem to get brighter every year. You'd think it was common sense not to point them through people's windscreens, unfortunately that appears not to be the case.

One of my top pet hates since moving a little bit out of London - the amount of people who use full beams to drive anywhere. You just don't need them!!! I never use them and am amazingly still alive. Morons in their Range Rover Sports with their lighthouse beams at eye height who only manage to dip their lights as I pass them if at all.

They clearly get bored with having to turn them on and off for every person they come across (which every road user should in answer to the OP) which kind of goes full circle to my rant. Not needed, not worth the hassle.

Yes of course, they're road users.

I always dip for anyone, even if they are just putting out their wheelie bin. (I suppoese that falls under pedestrians) I would say on foot (running or walking the dog) about 50% of drivers dip. On a bicycle about 70% dip and on a motorbike most dip. I agreee about the bicycle lights - some folk round here run a twin halogen setup that is very blinding.

My wife used to keep horses on an army base. At night the rule was you switched to sides as you entered the base to prevent blinding the guards on the gate. I used to look after the horses (in a converted munitions store) when she was away at work. I know the SA80 isn't the most highly regarded weapon in the world but I'd prefer not to find out the hard way. smile
