I've just moved to a village which is a bit isolated. It's pretty hilly around us, and when the snow came down hard 18 months ago I know that a lot of people were unable to leave the village for quite a few days. I currently drive an M6 and am aware that it's not the best car in the snow(!), so need to replace it. My thoughts are 2011 Mini Countryman Cooper S (bit dull and not very premium in the cabin), 2006 Range Rover Supercharged (fantastic car but worried about big bills), 2007 Porsche Cayenne S (I'm struggling with the looks) or an 2007 Audi RS4 (probably my favourite choice). Does anyone have any thoughts about what the Audi would be like on winter tyres in the snow?

Just so I have this straight.

Are you in the UK?

Are you looking to trade in your daily driver for a car to handle the snow we get for a few months of the year at most.

Would it be not more cost effective to buy a cheap 4x4 snotter for when the snow arrives and sell it on afterwards?

You didnt post much detail so alot of assumption in my post so forgive me.

I have an E55k AMG Estate and with winter tyres on the only thing that will stop me is ground clearance on packed snow. So I would say go for it!
Oh and for perspective I live in the wilds of Northumberland.

Buy what ever car you want

Stick some winter rubber on it and be amazed and how much snow and slush you can get through

However a ford focus on winter rubber is cheaper then an M6 front bumper which is a useless fact until you consider the abilities of a M6 front bumper as a snow plough

Apart from a couple of uk days where potentially we could have really bad snow, an RS4 on summer tyres will get you most places
As said above, ground clearance isn't great, but the quattro traction makes it a much better option than your M6 would be
Fwiw, I had vredestein 255/35/19 winter tyres on standard wheels, but a friend was running higher profile, much narrower winter michelins (iirc) on a 16" wheel. It looks a little like an andros trophy car, but it would drive confidently through even the most packed ice with ease.
Where I had snow tyres on my RS4, it would get up slopes were even RR drivers on summer tyres were struggling

A mate of mine has an A4 Quattro on winter tyres and it went everywhere that my Range Rover went over the few snowy days we had, albeit on fairly standard roads.

All the options you mention sound great for replacement cars, but are you seriously considering a Mini Countryman?

I haven't seen such a ridiculous looking car since Toyota launched the Prius. M6 to countryman... I think not.

+1

I live at the bottom of a big country hill, so I got a Jeep as a 3rd car for £1400 and it's great for the recycling run, rough stuff etc as well as snow and floods.

I'm getting the impression the Countryman isn't universally agknowledged as the best looking car in the world! I'm glad I've had some other opinions to back up my thoughts about it!

Yes, I know there aren't many snow days in the UK but I have to do everything I can to get to work so I have to give myself the best chance I have. I just want to have some fun as well!

Looks like the general opinion is that the RS4 on winter tyres will get me pretty much as far as the 2 proper 4X4s I was thinking of on summer tyres.

The feedback is much appreciated.

Is this the first winter tyres thread of next winter? Can't you just enjoy the sunshine?

Unortunately, in response to Bluebarge, waiting till winter to sell my 500BHP rear drive coupe for something that's better in the snow probably doesn't make the best financial sense!

But, yes, I agree, it does seem ridiculous to be talking about that in this weather.
