OP - check very carefully before doing this, or changing the wheels as it's highly unusual for a company insurance policy to allow this leaving you driving uninsured and of course getting fired if you have bump.

I had a Passat 140 SE estate last weekend as a weekend test drive for my next company car. Big, comfy, good for what it is. Quite liked it in a "if I was doing massive miles this wouldn't be a bad place to be" kind of way. Delivered 45+MPG when driven in a way a Passat estate shouldn't really be driven. It is absolutely enormous though. if you don't need the space, get the Golf.

Oh, and I HATED the stereo controls, couldn't get the thing to do what i wanted. In the end stuck on BBC 6 Music and left it be all weekend - I'd be upgrading to Nav and the touch screen radio if I could. Dash is fairly boring as well - even my wife who doesn't care about these things commented on it.

Noted and valid point - Anyone want a TDI-Tuning box lol.

Think I will go book a drive at VW and Vaux then, Heart wants Golf but really think I will struggle on size unless the pram goes in the boot ok.

It's a Golf, not an Up. How much more practical can a car be?

Just to give you an idea - our Bugaboo went in the boot in the Passat lengthwise and left half the boot alongside it empty!

Is there no Octavia available? Basically the same car as the Golf, but with an extended rear overhang for a larger boot. Or do they not do the Octavia with the most modern, efficient engines?

My daughter has an iCandy something or other and it fits in the Golf boot. But that's it, nothing else could go in there!

The car (hers is a special edition, but based on the old SE, 1.4 petrol Twist) is a very nice drive and does feel a quality level above other similar cars.

My choice would be Insignia.

It look good IMO, strong engine and loads of room for baby and dog. I would think its better equipped than the VAG cars as well.

However the Golf would be tempting. Probably quickest, they also look ok and will have the better MPG. You could always get a roof box for those times you need more space.

A £21k car with 16% BiK will cost £56 or £112 in the coming year for 20%/40% taxpayers.

From April 6 the fuel scale charge goes up to £20,200 (with another 2% above RPI next year).
That £20,200 is then multiplied by the BIK rate charged for your car, and tax is payable on that value at your tax rate so a 16% car will cost £53 or £107 in the coming year for 20%/40% taxpayers.

Unless you can use that value of fuel in your private mileage the fuel benefit doesn't work, but if you have a long commute it probably is worthwhile.

I'm in a similar position at the moment, but my purchase is with car allowance. I have to have car with a P11D value of £21,350 when new, but it can't be any older than 6 months old when I buy it.

I've discounted the Insignia 130 Exclusiv so far.

No it doesn't - The XKR has been our family car since the birth of our daughter 9 months ago and, while we don't have a dog, the Jag has lugged the three of us plus pushchair, large tent, sleeping bag, matress, stove, table, clothes etc. etc. on a two week camping holiday to the IoM. The golf is infinitely more practical than this, so just get it and carry less stuff. My philosophy is that however big your car, it will always be too small for al the stuff you may want to take. To put it another way, the crap expands to fill the space provided!

Buy the Golf - its what you want and get a roof box at a later date if you absolutely have to.

Just had a look, 2011 / 12 figures and then stepping up as you described.

Insignia - £64.14 just the car / with fuel £120.54

Passat Saloon SE - £48.10 just the car / with fuel £88.83

Golf GT Tdi BM - £49.32 just car / fuel £90.06



FYI - Pooch is a large working Chocolate Labrador.
