It may well have taken the Yanks 20 years to catch on to the benefits of turbocharger
They made the first production car with one, a decade before anyone in Europe. This car is tuned by the same guy that tunes our car.Shane Tecklenburg...
One of the reasons for turbos being ignored for a long while by US motor manufacturers is fuel price. Why have fuel efficient engines when fuel is 50c a gallon? They sold what people wanted, big cars with big engines that would make as much power and more than any turbo 4 banger.
Of course now they're paying the same sort of price as us for fuel it's a different ball game.

Absolutely true, but they did have an unhealthy fetish for superchargers for many years to bump up specific output. As i'm sure you're more than aware, expecially in the Drag scene (no, not that Drag scene!) the very mention of "turbocharger" until suprisingly recently, was likely to go down like a presence of a Black American at a KKK meeting......... ;-)One of the reasons for turbos being ignored for a long while by US motor manufacturers is fuel price. Even with the recent rising trend in US fuel prices, they are still only paying £2.44 a US gallon, so just under £3 for an imperial one.One of the reasons for turbos being ignored for a long while by US motor manufacturers is fuel price. Yea,until around 2004 it was only very specialist people who dabbled with turbos and EFI.Those guys were like gods then.Carbs, nitrous and superchargers were king for normal guys.

It is an impressive beast, but he really does need to work on his technique getting the thing off the line! I'm amazed they wanna broadcast that one, not the most professional.
Launching off the line might barely add 1 mph to your end trap speed while increasing the chances of broken axles/ diffs/ tranny. <-- This is what my buddy who got his '04 STI to 198 mph at the mile told me.Rollcage said:

4 bucks is 4 pounds in real terms for them. Forget the exchange rate.If you get paid in dollars who's bothered about what your dollar is in pounds?

If a car does 257mph in a mile then I'd consider that to be a big deal. If it's a twin turbo GT then even better.
Then again, I'm a petrol head.
For comparison what does a Golf GTI hit at the mile mark and then let's say a really fast car say a 997Turbo. Just to get this into perspective as to what an achievement this is. Then again, I'm a petrol head.

So, regarding Heffner Performances 266mph run last year, did that turn out to be an error in the timing gear or BS? As I thought that was still the title holder.
So many great cars that are pulling big texas mile numbers now - boostlogic's supra, AMS' Alpha GTR etc. Exciting stuff
There is deffinately some intresting stuff out there. The GM guys are going to be upping the game shortly. I have seen a few VERY powerfull (2500bhp ish) builds running up to theis event (the LMR (late modle racing) guys ran a 550 + i think). The cars im seeing going to this event are getting more and more like purpose built mile race cars and not just fast street cars or converted drag cars! At a recent airfield day my 390hp Evo 6 hit 149.94mph (GPS) 162mph on the clock, in just under a mile but it was a rolling start from about 20mph, car was weighed straight afterwards at 1410kgs, it was wet with a slight crosswind but i dont think that had much effect I'd be surprised if the 997 was much different
I have to laugh at all the Veyron vs American tech comments on here. Look, there's now a Shelby Mustang with just as much horsepower as a Veyron and it uses only one supercharger and 8 cylinders with only 5.4 litres. Explain that. Actually, it's the same basic engine as on this car, but uses a supercharger instead of turbos. Look, the Americans and their big, dumb V8's have been ahead of the Europeans in horsepower any time they felt like it, and it's been that way since the 1950's.
The only thing sillier and more misinformed are all the posters talking about a "crap start". It was anything but. Putting your tires up in smoke is not how you drag race.
