Scooby WRX or WRX STI?
Discussion
Evening all,
I have finally made the decision (after much searching) to go back to a Scooby again. The quandry I now have is to I go for a newer WRX or a couple of year older STI as I am looking to keep it for a while and transform it into a bit of a monster. I have either about £5,500 cash or including trade in up to about £8,000. I am looking for as low mileage as possible non modded car as I have a very good friend who can do the work for me for just above trade prices....
I had a 2004 WRX last year and I was told it could only be safely modded with standard issue engine / hearbox etc up to about 295bhp. This was fun but I am looking to mod up to about 400-450 over time. Would the STI be the better choice??
Advice please
Rob

Your £5500 would buy you a 'blobeye' STI, that's personally what I'd be looking at, based on the upgraded brakes, nicer interior etc. For the kind of power you're after, you'll need a full rebuild using forged internals. It won't be cheap, no matter who's building it. The price of the parts alone are quite expensive.

You should buy an STi if you want to tune it up.
The WRX is the 'standard' model, engine not nearly as strong as the Sti and wrx engine will go pop at some point if tuned to the figures you are talking (I wouldnt touch a WRX with the boost turned up).
Some good bargains to be had right now for your budget.
also avoid 2.5 models even Sti 2.5 is not a robust engine.
Buy a Spec C if you want the best fun to drive Impreza if you are lucky you might find one within budget, ideal base for tuning.

In my opinion if you're planning on modifying to that level it's a no brainer. A 2 litre will make that power and it's already got the 6 speed box you'll need and the Brembo brakes you'll also need.
My Subaru is a classic and I'm running 420bhp (soon to be close to 450) and I'm using a completely standard 2005 sti short motor (with bolt on's) and 2003 sti gearbox
