No you're not.
Er, yes I am. I'll take photos and bump my other thread (the thread about whether I should stick my plate plate on or not, which some people did not believe)

you'll see

Just post pics with custard. Meant to be birds, but in a recent thread, ambrosia (sp?) was acceptable. smile

(Caution: NSFW though)

I would take the £500 hit and get the lower excess. This also has the added benefit of making it even more likely that people will ask you what you drive when you tell them how much your insurance is.

out of interest, are you going with the more subtle "oh, I drive an SLK" (with maybe the internal model designation for the benefit of the mercedes anoraks), or the less subtle "I own a '12 plate Mercedes Benz SLK roadster"?
I only ask as the lovely young ladies you will most often be saying this to may not understand the relevence of simply 'SLK'.

I'm assuming the latter, but will that not be a bit of a mouthfull, as you will no doubt also point out that you are only 19 years old each time aswell?

Or perhaps you could use the full make and model the first time, then use the shorter version for each of the 456 subsequent times you mention it?

All you've ever done since registering on PH is tell us about the fact you are 19 and buying an SLK.

Nobody here can tell you how to make a decision as personal as which size of excess you are personally comfortable with. You know this, it's just another disguised 'Yea, I'm 19. And I've got a 12 plate Mercedes' thread. This is the confusing bit. I cannot imagine why a 19 year old capable of earning such a huge pile of money only 3 years after finishing school that he can buy cash (Remember, you told us it isnt on finance) a £30,000 car would be in the slightest bit interested in showing off to a bunch of people on the internet he has never met. Such a 19 year old would instead be far too busy doing the sort of constructive stuff that got him in that position in the first place.

And would probably have subsequently invested that £30k back into more ventures rather than a base model Merc with a 12 plate.

So this remains as bizarre as it ever was.

Hey guys, this topic seems similar to my idea for a topic, so I will post my question in here.

I'm 19, my dad is getting a new SLK tomorrow. I would like to drive it but the insurance is too expensive and daddy says he won't pay. Did I mention I'm 19? Anyway, I will take a photo of some custard on his car. I'm 19. My dad is getting a new SLK. My question is, how many people on PH can I let know that I'm 19 and my dad is getting a new SLK tomorrow?

Why are you buying an bottom of the range SLK brand new? Other than because you can afford it?

fixed that for you.

and next time I suggest you show some recognition of this 19 year old's achievements that have allowed him to buy his very own brand new 12 plate mercedes SLK.

Ok. Please make sure the Mercedes Benz logo is clearly visible in all photographs, along with your driving license.

For your age, i can see you regretting that car.

You'll look like a 50's hairdresser. They all seem to drive slk's.

Get something equally nice, but more your age.

Yeah fair enough.
I'll go with the 2.5k excess.

50's hairdressers would have driven 190SLs wouldn't they?

Er no?

Sure I'll give you picture of the car with it accompanying custard. But no chance if me showing my license. I seriously do not care if you do to believe me. Doesn't make a different to me mate! haha

Life is one big gamble. If you take the higher excess quote it saves you £500 a year, but you would be liable for the first £5k of any repair. But seeing as this is supposedly a 12 plate SLK, it won't take much of a prang to rack up a repair bill of those sorts of numbers.

So the maths seem to be this... if you think you can drive for five years or more without making a big claim, then go for the higher excess. You'll save yourself £500 a year or £2500 over the five years.

But if you don't think you can go five years without having a crash, then go for the lower excess and pay the extra £500.

All other things being equal, the break even point is five years without a big claim.

But I'm as puzzled as everyone else. If I was 19 and genuinely had £30k to spend, I certainly wouldn't be putting it into a brand new SLK. I wouldn't worry too much about an extra £500 a year. And I wouldn't feel the need to tell everyone about it.

So you are too young to have finished education and therefore possibly not started a decent job yet. You cannot afford the £500 extra for even very limited insurance. Plus you are renting or have a new slk on finance (as per your other thread). You may have over stretched yourself a tad! Enjoy it, but perhaps you have been a tad wreckless smile Reminds me of being 19 and a touch hasty!!

Whats the point? It wont silence any of the doubters - it's not particularly difficult to put custard on a car and take a photo. Many of us have access to the keys for cars that do not belong to us after all.

There isn't really anything you can do perhaps stop only posting to tell us you are 19 and have an SLK. You didnt really need advice on your excess at all, a point made all the more clear by the fact you appear to have gone from a state of being undecided to having made up your mind off the back of about one half decnet reply in this thread.

He's just going to look like he's borrowing his mum's car.

In fact, probably best to just be a named driver on your mum's policy. No insurance company is going to argue that your mum isn't the main driver.

Nope, I checked the prices for the insurance for next year and it's much cheaper than this year. Therefore this has made be decide than I'l pay an extra £500 for a lower excess seeing as if I do have a crash the garage bills will cost lots.

No because that's called fronting, which is illegal..
