So that's the last weekend I can legitimately wash the car with the hose pipe for the foreseeable future.

My area, Northamptonshire, will have a hose pipe ban from Thursday, yet very little publication on this. Who will abide by this ban.

I was going to drive to a private golf club, park it on the green and let their hoses clean it, as they're exempt from any ban.

This ban is pathetic considering water companies lose 3 billion litres a day due to finding fines more affordable than fixing the leak problems. There's nothing to stop me filling up 150 buckets and pouring it all over the place though, as theres no hose involved.

Works a treat....

Doesn't even need to be the official one just a gardening one will do.... or just use a bucket and sponge aslong as you fill it up from the a tap that doesn't have a hose attached to it hehe

how much water are they pumping per day and what percentage of that are they loosing to leaks/bursts?

When the weather is dry, cars don't get dirty, so why wash them? It's only vanity. So your windows are dirty. 10 minutes with a bottle of windowlene and some paper towels will sort that out.

It's not the water companies fault we have had 2 very dry winters in succession. Nor is it their fault most of the people and therefore demand is where the least rain falls.

On a scale of importance, drinking water will be a fairly high priority, food production a bit further down. Toward the bottom will be watering fking golf courses, further down still will be watering the garden and somewhere toward the very bottom will be washing the car.

At work, we have been asked how what percentage of water we can cut back on for irrigation. This could seriously reduce the yield and quality (and obviously profit) if it doesn't rain. And you're worried about washing the poxy car?

What is daft is that if there are 1000 people who would wash their car on their drive wanted to wash their car during the hose pipe ban but remain legal, they would simply drive to a car wash and pay to have their 1000 cars washed. So how is water saved?

<insert your own Philosoraptor meme>

PS What is wrong with creating desalination plants?

My guess would be the the typical ARC type place is considerably more efficent with it's water use than some bloke on a sunny afternoon with a hose pipe. They do say that they recycle their water. Not sure if they mean that it goes into the sewerage system and the water companies recycle it for them or they have a small filtration plant.

I'm not worried about washing anything I just cant stand silly rules which have no purpose.

You mention private Golf courses, but they are exempt from the hosepipe ban. Football grounds are allowed to hose their pitches to make the ball move faster but i'm not allowed to wash my car? And the car gets very dirty in summer I find. The stupid part is theres no restrictions on me using water, merely restrictions on through what vessel I use it. I can fill up 150 buckets and use them to wash the car, using more than a hose would use with no penalty.

The dry winters may not be their fault but refusal to invest in desalination for decades is their fault. For decades we've been told global warming is coming and the East of England has a dry climate anyway, yet we still rely heavily on rain for water in the 21st century? Madness.

Re recycling water... really? I didn't know what.

Re desalination plants... why are there objections to building one in the South East then?

Edit: Looks like we have one. Clearly, we need more!

There is one in the south east.

The problem with desalination is it uses huge amounts of power.

I understand there's a hose pipe ban in my area, although I've only heard this by word of mouth and not actually being informed
According to thames water web site there's a ban and it's been advertised in the local paper. However, I don't buy the paper
If they're to enforce a ban and slap £1000 fines on people, surely they legally have an obligation to notify us in writing and not just assume we read the paper / listen to word of mouth

Personally, I'll just fill another bucket and do it that way, but I'd be interested to hear if they're actually going to enforce it...

Oh, right! Thanks for the reply.

I guess more power = more clcensored chcensored = more drought = more desalination plants = more power... until Britain is one giant desalination plant. biggrin

I had better go turn off the taps I'd left running since 9am in protest.
