Having seen the one where somebody claims "I'm sure **everybody** on Pistonheads has done 150mph on the public road" or words to that effect (despite the fact that every bugger on Pistonheads appears to own an MX5!!), made me think how many absurd claims there actually are.

I'm a petrolhead through and through, yet I've never had a car that will even get close to 150mph - same for most of my friends.

The only ones I know of who wouldn't think twice about doing those speeds are mates with superbikes, who can get to 150+ in a couple of seconds on a junction free road, without worrying about spending 6 months in prison!

Or perhaps the comment where somebody claimed a 1.4 car just wasn't capable of cruising at motorway speeds (which again is complete bks, our Fiesta is a lot nicer at 70-85mph than my Elise!!).

So yeah - what's the daftest car related comment you've seen on here, where you can't actually work out whether people are being serious or not, or just trolling?

Edit: It's kind of car-related.

I always loved the suggestion that by folding the rear seats of your hatch back down in it would increase the speed of your car.

I'll leave others to re-tell “cadence clutching” stories.

Yeah the one I read he was definitely claiming it made his car lighter!!

The CoG thing isn't quite so daft, but still not worth bothering about.

This one was quite good. It got buried quite quickly though and is not very well known.

Not the point of your thread, but I would say a lot of people on PH have been at 150mph on a public road at some time, whether in their own car or as a passenger. Obviously it would be foolhardy to admit to it on a public forum, but it's all comparitive as the average modern merc/bmw/audi, say a 3l and up is capable of cruising at 130mph very easily so the extra 20mph is no problem in the right conditions. To get near to 150mph you usually need 210-220bhp or thereabouts, so not uncommon.

"That new RCZ looks a lot like a TT"
"That new Boxster is the same as the old MR2"
...and associated lazy "it looks like..." comments...
No it doesn't unless we're talking Chinese mirror images, 99.999999999999999999% of new cars only have a passing resemblence to other cars normally in terms of having glass, metal, 4 wheels, a grille and some 'jewellery'.
Sharing a market sector, detail or following a trend does not a copy make.

In defence of the person who wrote that, I found myself in this situation last week. Cycling in to the office I noticed some guy going the other way with the roof down and just a T shirt and jeans on with a temperature no higher than 2 degrees, which struck me as taking "I've got a soft top" to extremes. He was absolutely definitely either in a yellow Boxster or a yellow MR2, but I couldn't tell you which of the two it was if my life depended on it! I was riding into the sun, but even so I could've told you what any of the other three cars in front and behind him were.

Yeah, this. My car (190odd bhp) is perfectly capable of ~140mph; many average saloons are these days. I've never tried it, but I have been over 180mph in a Porsche (on public roads in another country), and I'm not exactly the most dedicated PHer.

Re: daft comments. So much is tongue-in-cheek that I always assume that apparently moronic statements are trolling/joking. Having said that, there was a guy a while back who was certain that he'd come up with an idea for what amounted to a perpetual motion machine. Perhaps he's been silenced by the oil industry, though. Oh, and I've seen some (apparently serious) comments where posters decide that others don't "get" driving due to their choice of car.

Indeed it does.
