Perhaps the engine will loosen up and improve with more miles. Seem to remember the civic I had took about 10k to 15k to get better mpg.
+1

Our VW diesel is still running in and returning pretty poor mpg. I'm told it will improve at 5k then even more at 20ish k miles. Maybe it's a VAG diesel engine thing? Having said that a 1.6 diesel should be VERY good on fuel even it ragged horribly!

yes my A3 2.0 140 is now at just under 30k miles. It seems to be averaging a good 8mpg more than it was this time last year when I first got it with delivery miles on the clock. Easily hits high 50's on a long run without trying, whereas it used to be 50ish.

This is encouraging because I needed to drive like an absolute grandma to hit 30mpg average today. Yes it's a 180bhp bi-turbo diesel hauling over 2.5 tonnes but even so, it was beginning to worry me...!

I honestly don't know, it's likely someone else here will have first hand experience of a VAG becoming less tight with age (!) and they'll be able to tell you. It'll differ with driving style, engine and probably even the climate (South Coast vs Scottish Highlands!?).

Perhaps you'll see 5-10% improvement by 30,000 miles? Just guessing.

60 mpg is pretty decent from a half city/half motorway drive nonetheless. Google some fuel economy tips and you might be able to get it up a few MPG even just now - for example easing off the throttle earlier before junctions, and anticipating as far ahead on the motorway so you don't burn fuel simply barrelling into the back of a queue :P
No worries mate.

I've had a look at tips but driving like that was what got me 60mpg, and it was bloody hard work. I just imagined I'd be getting more than 45-50mpg driving my usual way. I'll give it a couple of weeks and see how it goes.
