I realise I am bucking the trend but I just don't like the lines of the tapering roof. It just looks a bit too Tonka Toy. I adore the Range Rover Sport though.

Belsize Park is crawling with these...

It wasn't.

Evoque vs Qashqai is hardly a choice most buyers would be faced with.

Seen a couple of these in the flesh in the last few weeks and IMO they are very impressive things. Love the OP's choice of colour combo too. Great write up thanks thumbup

Why not? I looked at a qashqai along with a CRV, an XC60, an rx400/450 and an evoque. A wide range of prices i know but i wanted something around that size (rather than an x5,q7,RR). They are all supposed to be family cars are they not?

As nice as the evoque is, even if it was sub 30k like some of the others, not 40plus in the spec I would want, compared to the others, the poor view for kids in the back and small boot ruled it out for me. That's not saying its a bad car, but it's the worst family car of the cars I looked at. It all depends on your individual priorities.

A qashqai may offer more boot space and a better view for the kids, but

For the evoque, the feel of the interior, the solid thud closing the doors, the look of the dials, the classy comfy seats etc blah blah......the attention to detail is staggering. Plus, that concept car exterior...smile
I cant imagine kids being full of joy at the sight of their parents new crv or qashqai

On paper others beat it. But in reality Im willing to bet that most familys will have a far more enjoyable experience living with the evoque

1 big problem tho, as you mentioned, maybe 40grand for a decent one....

Try explaining that to a non pistonhead like my wife... We are currently debating on a new car, my proposal were a RR Evoque for her and the new RS4 for me... she wont get it!!!! It si frustrating... She thinks we should buy just a RR Sport and a smaller car like a mini or something like that...

Problem with a tall driver is that rear legroom will be massively compromised, as it's very limited as it is. The boot is tiny and shallow due to the 4wd stuff (even on 2wd versions) so all in all it's smaller than a Golf inside.

We looked at it but bought a better equipped and crucially much bigger Nissan Qashqai+2 for almost half the price (with a big broker discount that may help towards worse residuals in % terms). I think the Evoque is good looking but we don't care about image enough to want something that looks so ostentatiously middle-class...

I don't see how it could do any more than very light off-roading with those all weather tyres, not that it's an issue as none will ever see any off-roading anyway. I doubt the car would survive the experience.

Still, it's built in the UK which is great news.

The main reason why it looks so much like the concept is that the concept was not a concept, it was a tooled up production car with fake concept bits, that trick started with the TT Mk1, which again was never a concept in the true sense of the term.
I'm glad you got the car you wanted. Personally, the cash cow is not for me, I don't want a car that looks like a 4x4 but without any 4x4 credentials, I'd much rather just have a 4WD car in that case.

RRE is excellent off road, the fact that you can't see how it could be is irrelevant, it is exceptionally capable. I have driven one off road but if you don't believe me, please read some of the reviews where the car has been driven off-road.

LR1 was a concept car. It was manufactured solely because of the positive reaction to its looks. Again, development story reveals a lot about how this car came to market. If reaction to Evoque had been negative, it would never have been built.

Very true. My kids love it! And personally I think it's a very nice place to sit!

I like the design and it does garner positive reviews from the motoring press, would possibly consider one for the other half.

I'm quite scathing about the X6 because of its 'form over function' status, yet feel quite defensive about the Evoque. Suspect they fall into the same camp really, but each to their own.

Just to underline my shallowness, i have spotted many a driver who could be bracketed in the pseudo footballers wives category, which does put me off a bit, shame on me wink

The 'feature' sounds very much like an advert, how much are LR paying for this?

Ugh. I take the very fact that this car has been productionised at all to be nothing less than a sign that a) the world has gone mad, b) economic development is long past reaching its zenith and is hurtling inexorably downhill, and c) anyone who buys one has clearly lost touch with reality.

I love cars just as much as Mr Cox and most other PH readers, but I would seriously suggest that here we have an example of an utterly pointless product which people could only talk themselves into buying if they existed inside a moral vacuum and had far more money than they know what to do with. If you must have an off-road-capable car then please, for the good of humanity, get yourself a 10-year-old Subaru Forester instead, and donate the difference to helping out the disadvantaged, or towards research into energy efficiency. Buy and Evoque by contrast, and you are committing an anti-social act of ethical, environmental, economic, and aesthetic negligence and vandalism. Tell me I'm wrong!!

Have you read many of the "Carpool" articles? Do you understand the concept of them?

Not an advert - all my own work!
However, if LR would like to show there appreciation in some way......just kidding, these are my own opinions about my own car, based upon my needs and my circumstances.

Clearly some people like the Evoque, some don’t. I do. Vive la différence.

.
Very true - as I mentioned in my own posts earlier, I had a Discovery 4 before the RRE so know what a 'proper' 4x4 should be capable of and, yes, the RRE will not match the D4 but it is still a very commendable 4x4.

YouTube has many videos of the RRE in extreme conditions performing admirably for those who need to witness it. Even on the standard tyres.

But to be truly amazed - folks should go on a Land Rover experience day. The Defender and D4 will impress you but you knew they would...the RRE will amaze you because it does off-roading far better than you think it would.

I won't tell you you're wrong. I will say that not everyone has the same priorities in life and anyone who projects or forces their personal priorities on someone else gains little respect from me.

Most of your points in you last sentence are arguable, for examples:
Ethical - JLR are employing 1000+ more people due to the demand for the nerw models. You can argue that people buying them are directly helping to employ more UK workforce.
Economic - see above, more money flowing through the UK economy.
Aesthetic - subjective, some will like the styling, some won't, so it's pretty poor to use as a general point. The most you can say is "I don't like it".

You're wrong. You're also a tool.

UK employment - All of the money into UK economy due to the wages of an incremental 1500 people (third shift to keep up with demand).

As a vehicle it has clearly polarised people. Rather have a car that nobody has an oppinion on or is disinterested in? You don't like it. You don't become unethical or aesthetically immoral as a result of making a purchase decision to buy one, never heard such a load of tripe. Get on with your life in your ratty Subaru. rofl
