Car Dealer Will Not Return Deposit?
On an impulse I thought I would get my wife a little convertible MX5.

I found one on Autotrader rang the dealer and put down a £250 deposit over the phone on my visa debit card. I intended to go see the car at the weekend to buy it ( full price £2500 ).

My wife though that evening decided she didn't like it so I rang the next day to apologise and get my deposit back.

No luck. The dealer said it was a contract and he will keep the money.

Do I have a leg to stand on? It would have been nice if he had warned me that it was non returnable before he took it.

Then later

No problem, I have contacted my bank, I explained I gave my card details to the dealer as a gesture of goodwill but didn't give him any authority to withdraw funds on a cardholder not present basis.

They have agreed to reverse the transaction.

Result.

Soyou the person lied to the bank about the deposit, and possibly fingered him for possible credit card fraud?

Generally the idea of a deposit is that the dealer will hold the car for you until you come with the rest of the money. If you choose not to buy the car the dealer has the deposit as partial compensation for any potential lost sale.

Englisharcher, I think you might want to edit your thread before you get given a lot of grief. The way it's written it looks like you are the guy who has messed the dealer around! wink

Looks like they think you're a dick on that site too, I wouldn't have bothered publicising the fact even more widely if I were you.

Ah, my apologies if our OP isn't the OP of the MSE thread.

It wasn't the OP - he's informing us of some wker on MSE posting what he's copied.

I see I'm far too late already!

Just to make it clear, the OP is just relaying a story from elsewhere. He's not the person who dicked the dealer around.

OP - I assume that it wasnt you who placed the deposit? If not then you need to make that point very clear otherwise you will be ripped to shreds.

Beaten to it!

Can't see this going well for you OP.

Pretty underhand tactics there. And you've lied to your bank. Looks a bit like fraud to me - obtaining pecuniary advantage by deception.

Why give him £250 if you didn't think it was binding in some way?
hehe C'mon people, reaaaad.

OP, do what anyone else would do, put it in quotes and italics and put the link at the top saying "Taken from here:" or something like that. Then it's really clear!

It does seem to be a little corner of the internet that is best left to the dribbling classes.

To be fair, just going on what he wrote, it seemed like it was himself doing the fraud. boxedin

The OP has rather cunningly changed his OP since he OP'd it... If you see what I mean. If he doesn't post clearly in the first place, st happens...

You're going to tell us to calm down, whilst utilising words that require the censor gif? Right... No irony there.
