In this week's Autocar:

V12 FER

For the bargain price of £500,000, yes that's right, half a million quid.

Ever seen a dafter price?

Didn't the plate F1 go to the Kahn bloke for a similar price?

F1 I can understand as being special, but V12 FER?

There's only a few V12 Ferraris it can go on (post 1999?)and nothing worth anything like that sort of cash with the possible exception of an Enzo. Maybe worth 10k or so at a pinch?

Exactly! I think even £10k is wildly optimistic!

If you had that plate and someone was prepared to buy it for £500k - would you sell it for under £10k?

Yes was probably a £250 plate when first issued, but if there is someone out there, which there will be, then i'd be chancing it too...

I really don't think they'll be an orderly queue forming though! I could advertise my BIC biro for half a million quid, but I don't expect anyone would buy it.

Nope. Someone bought it at a DVLA auction in December 1999 for £2,000.

£500,000 today? Well that's inflation for you!!

Of course not, but I doubt there is anyone insane enough and rich enough to spend £500,000 on a rather uninteresting plate. They'd have to be quite rich and quite potty to spend £10,000!

I never said there was, but if you were to wait a year - even two - that's still a hell a lot of money coming your way and bear in mind you've only got retention & advertisement costs to pay for...

I don't know Chris Evans/Jay Kay/insertfamousFerrariownerhere, could decide it was what they had always wanted?!

I think I saw the 'F1' plate on a Ferrari (possibly an Enzo) in Christchurch, Dorset a while back.

Well there you go then.

You can hardly blame them, can you? Regardless if you think they are chancers or not.

Incidently. No, i'm not the one selling the plate BTW!

Sorry, papercut, you haven't grasped this one...auction price of £2k in 1999 indicates true value today probably £5k.

People who have £500k in spare cash to spend generally aren't stupid!

Yes i have grasped it. I don't think you have though! I never said it was worth £500k. I know it's not worth it. You know it's not worth it.

But...

You'd be very, very surprised, if that is your view.

BIC biro for sale. Rosso Corsa. One owner. Slightly chewed cap. 500 grand or very near offer. Genuine reason for sale (Greed).

Not a football fan? wink

Mind you, I must be a bit thick as I couldn't work out what the plate actually was and had to read the following posts to realise it was for a Ferrari.
