I drove it once back in the early 70's. My attorney friend and I hired a big red car and I went to write about some motorcycle race in the desert. It all got a little messy in the end!

Thats odd, must've been either the worst rental car ever or it was low on coolant or some other mechanical issue - any modern car shouldn't have the slightest problem keeping the air con on.

Did that journey twice (there and back - with a slight deveation to Phoenix to watch a proper race) it's not that boring first time.

Better drive is from SF to LA down the coast road (or back up it) Try and fit that one in if you can - nothing short of stunning

Depends how long you have and which way you are going, County Highway 10 between Topock and Kingman via Oatman is a very cool road. So long as there is no chance of rain, it is prone to flash floods.

We drove through the Mojave rather than the direct route. Still easily doable in a day, and that was with a 4 hour stop.

If you're wondering what this is about, watch 'Fear and Loathing in las Vegas' before you go, might give you a few ideas on how to spice up your trip smile

did it a few years back as part of a fly drive from san fran.... drove from venice beach to vegas via death valley... quite happily in a day... driving over the top of the mountain range and seeing the lights of vegas open out in front of you (it will be dark by the time you get there, so the effect is awesome) is memorable.

LA > Palm Springs > Vegas is worth a look if you have time.

We travelled from LA to Palm Springs via Laguna Beach, Caspers Region National Park and Lake Elsniore (great views, twisty roads and easily do-able in day). Had a one night stop over in Palm Springs (two nights maybe better).

Following day headed to Vegas via Joshua Tree National Park, Twenty Nine Palms and through the Mojave Preserve. I am sure we were in Vegas by 4pm having started out not too early.

You end up doing about 2 miles on route 66 using this itinerary, if your looking to tick an extra box!

I’ve done that trip a couple of times and have enjoyed it just because it is so uniquely American. My most memorably moment came a few mins after taking this picture of the most incomprehensible road name ever:

I was in a convertible Mustang when I was almost run off the road by an F14 Tomcat flying at zero feet that came up from my right rear quarter and flew directly over head. It was going so fast that I did not hear its approach. I was only hit by the sound as it went over and the car was filled with dust that had been raised by its engines. I slid to the side of the road with a couple of other cars and we all watched in amazement as this thing hugged the ground for a few miles before going ballistic and heading out over the mountains. I and the occupants of the two other cars just cheered and hollowed. It was an amazing experience and one of my best memories. This happened 22 year ago.
