Not a V8 (or any cylinders in fact), but have you considered an RX8? Not especially fast, but it's a wonderful chassis and the engine at least has some charisma. You might even find a V8 converted one if you're really lucky.

ETA: Ah you have an RX7, so you probably have. smile

Don't discount E60 5 series in 545 or 550 flavour. V8 for dad and modern safety for the kids. Not sporty though.

Jag R's are all Auto (NOT sporty)
Rover doesn't appeal

Gran Sport is on my list of future cars - bit expensive and thirsty really plus the capacity to produce a HUGE bill, 4200 GT is as the name suggests a bit too refined.
Just get a nice Cerbera and keep your fingers crossed!! smile

How's about a Jag S Type R? A little left field, but the family will thank you!

How about something like an Evo?

Ok, not the last word in interior quality, but should tick your boxes.

Also doesn't he want a sport drive?

I doubt an RS6 Avant will be more sporty than an M5 to drive.

I don't think there is a big, V8 saloon that is secretly a small, light weight sports car.

Get a Lexus and a Caterham.

RS4 B7 Saloon or Avant. I had the saloon and it really goes well.

I don't agree about the M5, I own an E61 and have as much fun in it as I ever had with my Lotus or RX8. It's what you do with them at the end of the day and with the DSC off you can smoke the back wheels when you want which is not easy to do with the limited power of the go karts.

M3 in V8 form is quality but the older straight 6's do nothing at all for me and feel really underwhelming on the power front compared to the E90.

Have you ever driven the B7 S4? It's not as quick as the RS but it's still a great car with a really revvy punchy engine and the Quattro is as safe as houses.

I guess a MG ZT V8 with a supercharger will be too sensible.
Not so sure on that score - aren't they supposed to be a bit lairy-hairy and old-skool?

Old School, yes. Not lairy. Hugely controllable in standard trim, I hear. Not sure what the ol brute would be like, with 400+bhp. Maybe not that sporty, but definitely fun! Where's my cheque book? biggrin
