The American coast-to-coast speed record is held by a nutter called Alex Roy in an E39 M5 loaded with all sorts of electronics (radar detector, laser jammer, CB radio, police scanner, thermal camera...). It took him (and co-driver) 31 hours and 4 minutes, an average of just over 90 mph. He also had a spotter plane for part of the route radioing him warnings of speed traps.

Indeed, Alex Roy of Team Polizei (Gumball 3000) fame.

His quest to break the record is chronicled in his book:
