RE: SOTW: Seat Leon 20VT

My old next door neighbour has a bronze coloured one of these and its an absolute minter. He looks after it like its made of glass and polishes it within an inch of its life! I covet it very much, the bronze looks superb on the car.
It only sees the light of day on dry days and evenings.

Had a burgundy one and loved it. Comfy, discreet and quick. A £350 remap gave about 210ish BHP and made a massive difference to the feel of the car. Would be tempted as a runaround apart from the fact it wasn't much more economical than my rex for my usage.

I know it's not a perfect car but I think of it as a great debate starter. The later cars 2003- look much better.
Its from a poor era of VW products that allowed products from seat and skoda to break into the market.
As a summer hack which you could break for spares at the end it's pretty good value!!
Re turbo I drove a Saab 95 for 12000miles with a blown LPT and a bodge repair to bypass it!

Even more Q car, dig out the equivalent Toledo 20VT Sport, the missus has one its quick (the 180bhp is conservative imho, feels like it would hold its own in the lower gears against my T5 which has 260bhp), has a nice 6 speed box, better put together than my S60 T5 and the dash / switchgear is Audi A3. Paid £3,500, had it 2 years and other than routine servicing hasnt cost a penny
I second this - best car I ever had. Not bad looking either I bought a lower mileage (and better looked after) example last month. I knew it wouldn't be as exciting as a Clio 172, but it's more relaxing on the motorway which is where it'll do most of its miles. It's not a B road hero - great for overtaking and grippy through the bends but a little lacking in feel. Agree that spending more on one in better condition makes sense - I'm hoping for thousands of trouble-free miles....

I had a Toledo V5 about 8 yrs ago. Cracking car. Less complicated than the 1.8T engine, plus it had chain driven cams. They're so cheap now!Another to look out for is the Toledo 2.3 V5, I had one from new for 3 years, fantastic car only needed normal servicing in 60,000 miles, fully loaded, well built, the offbeat noise was great from the V engine when you opened her up, compared to the contemporary boxy Jetta in looks no contest.

I second this - best car I ever had. Not bad looking either I was looking at these before I bought an A3 1.8T that's local to me. As much as I love Seats (I've owned 3 Ibiza GTI's) I just can't get to grips with the looks of the pre-facelift Leon Cupras, it's THOSE wheels, they just look dreadful.
I'd avoid this particular one, if you really want a Cupra I'd extend my budget or wait another year or two for the facelifted ones to fall into your price bracket.
This ones a beauty!

In answer to a previous post, they did come with those (dreadful looking) alloys iirc. A different set if later FR or Golf wheels would make a world of difference.
Potential to be a track car maybe? Strip the interior, put in a cage, give brakes & suspension a going over and it's a cheap track weapon.

Had one when its was 4 or 5 years old as my daily.
In metallic burnt Orange with black leather, was a great car till I decided to Superchip it and then it never ran right again.
Sold it and subsequently had a call to say it had been used in a armed robbery! So I guess it had enough HP to get them away from the rozzers lol!!

A leaky turbo sounds bad, how much is a new one?
That's what I thought when I read the article, but the ad says it's just a boost leak, which is nowhere near as big a problem. If it's anything like my Ibiza TDI, it's probably a 50-pence metal clip holding one of the boost hoses onto the intercooler. The little metal lugs wear, and then the hose pops off the intercooler when you put your foot down.I had one similar to that only mine was a 1.9TDI PD 130bhp. Good motorway tool (60mpg), decent interior trim, decent toys (climate, trip computer, leccy stuff).
However it was a pretty dull chassis and in the 3 years and 20k miles we had it, I never had one memorable drive (managing 67mpg indicated average over 300 miles was the only memory). Can't imagine the 20VT to be much better.
It replaced a 300ZX (which is still missed) and was replaced by an Alfa 159 Q4 (which is considerably more fun).
Shopping trolley, wouldn't have another.
