So, having not heard of this website before reading this thread this morning : http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I have spent a large part of today when I really should have been working browsing this site...Wow, my wallet and technical limits could really be stretched with this website...

Where else could you find a 61 plate Qashqai with 313 miles on the clock looking like this (I can only think of the poor sod who crashed it after what could only have been a week or two ownership!?) http://www.copart.co.uk/c2/individualLot.html?lotI...

Or the jealous bds who vandalised this RR http://www.copart.co.uk/c2/homeSearch.html?_eventI... with what looks like a fair amount of limp-biscuit-collected spunk...Still a RR with a bit of a clean up and a few new windows for a shade over 8 grand...it's tempting!

So...has anyone ever bought a salvaged car (I'm thinking a CAT D) before and brought it back to glory? Do the £ savings in buying one from the knackers yard outweigh the risk of driving a car with an 'interesting' history?

I love looking at salvage auctions on ebay and the like. It's a bit sadistic really....

Looks like the Nissan Couscous went right up the arse of a HGV. Damn i hate them cars.

Massive shame about that RR frown It'd easily need a full respray. Im unsure how you would clean/preserve the inside though.

Found this one before, im not sure what would be left to salvage! Engine and thats about it i guess.

Makes you wonder how many great cars with a couple of scratches are just sitting around in compounds such as that BMW doesn't it?

If your going to take positives from the RR it has to be that a respray would be cheaper as no glass to remove and interior could be taken out and worked on whilst being resprayed. If that can be bought for under 11k surely there's a profit in there or a good motor for someone.

Anyone fancy a 2011 Audi A3 Sport Convertible? The catch: it's very, very convertible.

It's a cat B , so it ought to be broken for spares only,
IIRC with copart you need special auth to buy cat Bs.

Very unlikely to make it back onto the road.

eta Comment meant for the Audi.

Look at this stunner: 1953 Armstrong Siddeley, looks to have been in good order before catching fire.

If you repair most written off stiff properly then you'll end up being better off if you'd have jsut bought something clean.

Plenty of ways to repair things on the cheap to end up making a profit, yet another reason to stay away from these unless you really know what you're doing.

Not necesarily(sp?) The rangerover for example there is no particularly cheap bodge job way of repairing it so you can't not repair it properly but if you were prepared to do the donkey work yourself or had experience/practice in bodywork it would easily come in well under even the roughest used price. I dare say being just paint thrown over it it may be a case of not even needing to respray it. Glass could be sourced second hand and would be no different from brand new and the same for the interior. In order to write the car off the cost of the repair has to exceed 45% IIRC of the value of the car including courtesy cars etc. Insurers only use brand new parts so the interior alone would cost a fortune compared to a used item +labour to put it back in at god knows how much an hour even though anyone could fit an interior for free + a like for like courtesy car would cost a fortune even if it only takes a few weeks to repair.

some of these could be written off for having the wrong fuel put in them, i imagen a derv filled and ran with petrol in it would destroy the engine, dpf etc

I can sort of understand vandalism could be something to do with drivetrain as there is no "run and drive verification", however how about this 1 series 917 miles http://www.copart.co.uk/c2/homeSearch.html?_eventI... Stolen/Recovered absolutely immaculate. Can't understand why this car hasn't been returned to its owner.

i think you can reject a car after its been stolen? or the insurance might pay out and then the car is recovered, so the car gets written off per say
