By chance I noticed a mark on the inside of my tyre upon investigation I saw this

since checked all others they are OK

I'm stunned, always thought I kept an eye on the condition of tyres, quick visual each time i leave the car, park on lock etc

what on earth could have caused this wear? there is no evidence of rubbing inside the wheel arch,
they are standard size tyre on the car.

I've seen it before on nonstandard wheels catching on the mcpherson strut lower cup.

But as you stated yours is standard then I'd suspect an alignment issue.

Get a proper one done, not just toe.

As for the crack, I'd go for age of tyre.

they are 234/45/ZR 17 on a 2007 Passat SEL 170

It drives very straight and true

is there a way of telling how old the tyre is as I have only had the car since Feb?
(pool car until I get my own car later this year)

Hmmm.

I know Kumho have a reasonable reputation these days - but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't see that kind of wear and damage to a tyre from one of the more well known brands.

It looks too far on the sidewall to be toe, more a camber fault?

I disagree, the worn strip where the tear is appears smooth and blue with heat. I suspect the tyre has been rubbing on some element of the suspension or wheel arch area.

this was my first thought

had a good poke around when I swapped the wheel .......
there is no sign of rubbing on the strut or the plastic inner wing lining
it is stil covered with an even layer of road grime

If the tyre was made within the last ten years or so there'll be an oval shaped impression somewhere on the outer sidewall. It'll have four digits in it which'll tell you the week and year the tyre was manufactured I.e. 2809 would be the 28th week of 2009.
This tyre has been significantly damaged and if your car doesn't have any nasty driving characteristics i'd wonder if that tyre had been on a different car or your Passat has been damaged in the past and driven for a period with damaged suspension or no tyre pressure.

the code is 2110 so it's not that old

your other point is something I hadn't thought of.
I'll have a chat with the Boss tomorrow

That looks completely wrong for road-wear to me. I'd say that's been touching something.

You don't need to rub a tyre to turn it blue, older radials would turn blue if you worked them hard enough. Looks to me more like a tracking issue to me or a bit of damage that has spread.

Doesnt look like tracking to my (completey untrained) eye. Surely if the alignment was out the tyre would have worn more on the contact surface of the tyre too.

Looking at the second shot at the tread pattern, its looks to evenly worn to have a alignment issue that would cause wear down to the canvas.
