Is a paypal doposit not OK if it's been sent as a gift?
Was going to say yes I've asked him to send it as a Gift so refunds aren't applicable like they are on an Ebay purchase for instance
My understanding is that Paypal can (and will) reverse payments (including those sent as gifts) up to two years after the transaction. If you close the bank account they won't be able to take the money back, but you will still owe so I guess you'll have CCJ's against you etc.

A 'faster payment' bank transfer is safe, as long as you leave it 24 hours after it appears in your account, my bank told me these cannot be reversed.

I think he has the potential to mess you around further. I am sure an inspeoction is bound to pick up the odd advisory - it would be true of any car - and I reckon this could be used as an excuse to walk or push the price down further.

And who the hell looks at 12 cars for god's sake?? It's not an F40 he is looking to buy!

Good luck with it and hope it turns out ok - I would still be accepting potential buyers personally.

I don't understand why PayPal is involved. If it's essentially a non-returnable cash transfer between UK banks then surely a bank transfer would be the most appropriate and these days it's almost instant.

Thanks guys, cautious is one word! Fair play to him but I've never looked at that many.....

I think I'll amend the advert to include the new pics I took before he came to see it, condition is hard to explain over text as so many people bull*hit their way through!

Thanks though, I am in two minds - The bit that also confused me was when he said he's asked Northway to do an Inspection and Valuation???????

Why would their valuation mean anything to him? Surely he knows what it's worth if he's prepared to pay it, does that mean if they value it at £18k I can ask for more money?? They're not likely to look at the detailing, tyres, brakes etc as part of the value so not sure how they can really do it - Surely they would just give a trade value on it?

He's more than cautious if he's been to view 13 cars! Id imagine he's worked very hard for the cash and he's anxious about getting the most expensive car/blowing it on himself now that he's found the car he was looking for so is delaying, transferring money between accounts etc, keep in contact and give him a week. Its not unreasonable to take 10days or so to close a car deal, but he's probably thinking is it worth the extra £1-2k, stay in contact so he doesnt consider the cheaper cars again imo.
It is completely unreasonable to take 10 days to close a sale, when the seller has said he will transfer a deposit right away. If he wasn't happy with the car, or even still considering it, why would he offer a deposit?

I see this every day of the week. You really want to give people the benefit of the doubt, but eventually you just give up.

As it's only been a few hours, I'd say hold out to tonight and see if he comes through. If not, no harm done. But as stressed earlier, his word is in no uncertain terms enough to take a car off the market, especially in the current climate. Tell any prospective buyers to come on ahead, and the first to put the cash in your hand drives the car away.

This.

Send the bloke an email stating this.

BTW - who views 12 boxsters? It's not as if they're hard to find, there's loads of them for sale.

He wanted to pay 2k less originally, my guess is that he is hoping they find some minor problems with the car and he can still achieve that...

Call he othe guy, let him come & see it, tell him the other guys is messing you about a bit, if he's interested an £xxx cash deposit confirms the car, if the first chap sends the cash through Paypal like he says at the same sort of time, refund it & tell him in the politest possible way, sorry, but you should've sorted things quicker.
I only hold things if i have the physical cash in my back pocket!

Maybe that's what it is, thing is Ray Northway has looked after it since it was 2 years old (out of Porsche Warranty) so he should know it really well, it's only done 3k miles since he serviced it anyway so I'd be shocked if he finds anything...

It's just had 1 year MOT, new tyres, new discs and pads so really shouldn't need anything!

Buyers perspective.

If I was the second buyer I wouldn’t go and look at the car if I knew someone else had ‘first refusal’.
Also, I wouldn’t look at a car if I knew the buyer would sell it to someone else once we had agreed a price pending an inspection, because the seller would do it to me.

Let him do the inspection.
Stick to you price.

So he wants to give you £250 to reserve the car and then may well want to use the Inspection to hammer you down a bit more or for you to return the deposit.

I'd be back onto the other potential buyer.

I'd also mention to this guy that because he hasn't firmly agreed to buy the car, you will have to let other potential buyers look at it.

Your task is to sell the car, not bend over backwards to this person. If he really wants it, then he has to act quickly.

Good advice. If nothing else it'll push him to get things moving for you.

Did you advertise it on PH originally? If so, he might be reading this!

I'm a landlord & get this all the time when we show a property - "I'll sort the deposit this afternoon" etc & trust me - they never do. Timewaster if you ask me - takes 2 seconds to do a Paypal transfer.

Valuation will be used to knock the price. Sale collapses.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think you're right to assume they will value at trade plus a bit.

Have to agree with the trend.

If he wanted it enough, he'd transfer the money.

He hasn't...

I think it is ironic that the (probable) reason people do this is to avoid being seen as a timewaster for viewing a car (or house) and not immediately wanting to go any further for whatever reason..... so they make lame excuses to leave / vague promises about sorting out the cash and then never show up again.

Would be a lot easier for everyone involved if people would just say "sorry, not for me" or "need time to have a think, i'll get back to you if I'm interested".

OP - I think you are trying to be honest and decent by giving this guy the benefit of the doubt, problem is from an outsiders view point he is clearly a timewaster or at best someone who is going to be a massive pain in the arse to deal with. As others have said and assuming it goes that far, I would expect him to use ANYTHING (however small) shown on the inspection to hammer the price back down to his original offer.

I recently had 3! seperate buyers via eBay "coming with cash tomorrow morning" to buy my old shed, none of them called or showed up despite exchanging long emails and phone calls just the night before...... buyers bullst excessively.

Keep marketing the car and call that other buyer back, first come first serve.

You're right of course but I am one of these people.

I always go away to consider, because I feel awkward or under pressure in front of the seller.

Having said that, I don't mess folk about. I let the seller know either way and never back out of a sale unless an inspection shows up a major problem.

Yes, nothing wrong with that at all....... As I bet you don't say 'I will just nip to the cash point, be back in 10 with a deposit, or 'hold the car I will paypal the deposit when I get home'... and so on.

I also reckon you would accept that the seller may sell the car while you are considering.
