Unfortunately, BMW know that once an owner gets their car stolen, that the insurance will pay out in the majority of cases and owners will move on with their lives and buy another car.

Some may stay away from the BMW brand however for every lost customer, BMW will gain a new customer so I am not sure BMW are that bothered.

If this makes it onto Watchdog or similar there is a chance that they may commission a recall and recoding of keys or similar.

A real shame for owners.

the proper disklok (the round yellow one that covers the steering wheel) has a security key that can't be picked (I own one).
The person who claimed the disklok can be defeated quickly and easily said the method used was brute force. Sounds like cr@p to me.

Is this going to be addressed by BMW

Many on here have reported keyless thefts recently, and now this...

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4259194/...

Now BMW are going to investigate. Poor show - why not before, why only when a footballer has his stolen.
Hardly a Watchdog investigation is it? Hopefully a paper with less turd mixed in with its ink will do a full story on it.

BMW can send out a device to all owners in the post, that will plug into the OBD and update the software. May cost a bit to manufacture - or it could be done as a recall / as part of a next service. Or you could disconnect the connector and hide the OBD socket to an alternative location or into the (locked) glovebox.

At the end of the day something needs to be done - nothing just shows they do not care!

Just to add - I do not read the sun, it popped up on a search and it's the first one that seems to suggest that BMW now may act on this.

We are all going to pay for this in our insurance renewals. Either BMW need an immediate fix, or insurance for those with "keyless go" technology should have their premiums hiked by 500% over night.

It's got nothing to do with "keyless go".

All that jazz

As I said in the other thread. It is a piss poor attitude by BMW that they havent done anything until a celebrity car is stolen. I will admit I am slightly worried about mine being a potential target.

Bear in mind that lots of robbers are probably getting their first taste of the BMW marque and may well become loyal customers in the future! smile

bmw will do nothing for as long as possible or until media impact becomes unacceptable, sales/values are hit or cars become un-insurable. I would expect this to be already a Board or Exco level issue within the firm and will be taking up legal time.

recall costs would be monstrous.

in all likelihood this crime wave will ease at some point, although levels look pretty high on a sustained basis

No. They will pass it on to all of us. We will pick up the bill.

I'm not a huge fan of the show, but seriously, has anyone contacted Watchdog about this? Many of their stories annoy me, but there is no denying that they do light a fire under the arses of big companies.

Perhaps if anyone has had their BMW stolen using the aforementioned method, they could get in contact with Watchdog and we could start to put pressure on BMW.

I have a feeling this will be a worst PR disaster then Lotus last week!

BMW desperately need to send out a statement about what their plan of action is.

Worked with cracked 19" wheels.
Didn't really as BMW are still selling cars on 19s that are cracking. I had 2 rears on my Z4 crack a couple of month ago, only bought on 19s after assurances that only 3 series and one type of alloy affected!
They were blaming potholes and roads until I pointed out all the other Z4s on our forum that had same problem on 296 style 19" wheels.
Only then did they replace them free of charge under warranty!

Worked to the extent that people got wheels replaced FOC or refunds etc, much like you have, if they had not covered the wheel issue then do you think that my mentioning other Z4 owners on forums you would have received replacement wheels under warranty now?

I think not.

Worth an email, what have victims got to lose, they've already lost cars.

They will not admit to it until it is made very public, something like watchdog might help.
Footballers car being stolen might help also as it made it to the papers.
My trusty old disklok has come out of hibernation till this is sorted.
