What company car
Discussion
Hi
Currently doing about 500-1000 miles a week and have just received my company car list!
Unfortunately it's pretty uninspiring so have narrowed it down to two.......
They are essentially the same car however one has a larger engine and less toys and vice versa.
Currently driving an insignia Sri 160 and find its reasonably comfy with an "acceptable" amount of go.
Anyway list is as follows:
A3 2.0 TDi 140 Sportback SE - like the size and engine not big on spec or wheels
Golf 1.6 TDi Match blue motion - like the looks and toys but not sure on power/lack of
Insignia 2.0 ecoflex Es - meh
Mondeo 1.6 TDCi Edge - poverty spec with glacial acceleration
Passat 1.6 TDi S - hmmm
Volvo S40 1.6 TDCi Drive Se - only other one I'm half considering
Car is our only one and have a baby and associated bits to cart around at the weekend.
Tax wise they are all within 2-3 quid of each other so doesn't matter.
Please help me choose! Power or toys?

Toys all the way for 40k+ pa personally. I reckon I would have the Passat or S40, possibly Golf. Do you need a hatchback? Volvo seats will be supremely comfortable if they are anything like the Volvos of old. I imagine the Drive versions or whatever they are called would be tuned to be quiter at speed also.
Over the Audi the Golf has
Auto lights/wipers/dimming rear mirror
Touch screen radio with DAB and iPod
Front and rear parking sensors
Cruise control
Bluetooth - I'm assuming I will be allowed to spec this in the a3 though
Plus little bits like footwell lights etc.
Writing it down I suppose its not much extra...

I don't know what it is with the golf, I've had a blue motion as a hire car and just seemed to be a nice place to sit.
Insignia is bottom of the range with the 130 engine and the Sri I have at the moment is not that comfortable - that may be due to the sports seats though?? 160 engine does pull smoothly through the rev range though unlike my previous mondeo (1.8 tdci)
I am going to test drive the S40 to see if they are as comfortable as people say as its the only saloon I'm considering.
V40 is out as its not on the list they look lovely though

Just got a Golf Match 1.6tdi Bluemotion tech myself for a company car, as with you was a bit worried about the lack of any kind of engine in the specification, however since getting it I have found it does in fact come with an engine and it can even "push" you back in your seat when needs be.
To be honest doing 500-1000 miles a week, how often are you going to need the full punch of the 140PS Audi? I'd of thought spending all that time in the car things like the cruise control and additional "goodies" the Golf offers would be more important to you.

I went from a 520d to a passat 1.6tdi slow motion thing (money saving(!)) back in Feb. Was dreading it. Adapt your driving style and it's not too bad (slow and overtakes aren't what they used to be) but comfortable, Bluetooth, iPod link, dab radio, air con and £160/month cheaper on tax!! I'm doing circa 35-40k per year. Not that bad really.
The 2.0TDI engine is superb, but as you say, the Audi spec. is a lot lower than what you get in the Golf.
Passats in 'S' spec. are very basic, and I'm not sure the 1.6 lump is going to be great in a car that size.
The Ford / Peugeot TDCI is slow and asthmatic in a Focus, so I daren't think what it's like in something bigger and heavier like the Mondeo.
The S40 is a run-out model, so I wouldn't consider that - they're also a bit basic unless in top end spec. - I looked at the Sport SE R-Design at one point, with the D5 engine. That was a great car.
So, I reckon the Golf is the one to have, so long as the 1.6 engine is up to the job - Match spec. is very good, I was impressed when I had a Match courtesy car a couple of years ago.
