I don't think he's that crazy to stage the whole thing happening...
Besides, if the slicks are DOT rated, they are legal in some states, as has been said... I believe the ones he's running are street legal, due to the fact there are two "grooves" in them...
Was already discussed over on SELOC, they're Kumho V710 tyres and are road legal over in California: http://www.kumhousa.com/tire/category/comp-race/E8...Besides, if the slicks are DOT rated, they are legal in some states, as has been said... What's the reason everyone hates on him
He can be a little brash and aggressive. He's owned an incredible array of Grp B cars and other exotica, and can be justifiably proud of his Lotus creation, and clearly knows an awful lot about motor-sport engineering but whereas us Brits are typically self deprecating, his forum persona is the exact opposite and tends to rub people up the wrong way. He also doesn't seem to suffer fools gladly. That said, from what I've read, people who've met him say he's a real gent and not at all like his internet persona.

The reason people "hate on him" [Hate on him?] is his rudeness and arrogance.Plenty of people build amazing cars, and his is an amazing car, without being so rude to other people, like he is constantly about Hennessey, with whom he's apparently obsessed with racing in "the canyons". The canyons are another theme you'll come to recognise if you read Ronin's posts.
Contrast Ronin's bombast with the understatement and politeness of Andy Frost, whose car is even more amazing, and you'll understand how Ronin tends to rub people up the wrong way.
edited for gratuitous rudeness myself.

Whilst I love the whole freedom thing - do people then have to park and walk home if it rains?
I understand this isn't likely in California but it must happen?
Really doubt that does happen in Cali!I understand this isn't likely in California but it must happen?
California is quite big, and has weather just like everywhere else that isn't in a TV show. They even had crop-killing frost in California last time I was in the US - it made the national news.
Wow, aggressive forum over on LotusSport.org - that thread has the most use of the word "c--t" of any thread I've seen - glad he's okay, sure the car will get sorted.
I must admit from reading his description that it sounds like he didn't see the Porsche alongside him (in his blind spot?) pulled left into it, and the impact on the rear right span him into the barrier. Porsche driver definitely should've stopped sooner, but the implication that is was a deliberate police-style manoeuvre from someone who hates him seems off.

Appalling behaviour of some people on Jalopnik, Lotus Sport and other forums. I believe it was quite a nasty shunt and a neck brace was initially needed for Frank.
Just shows how many idiots there are on forums - bet that confidence translates well into the real world.....
Fantastic achievement and dedication to build this car, absolutely gutted for Frank that it's been shunted.
As a fellow lotus owner/fanboy - I wish Frank the speediest of recoveries, and the car to recover not so long after.

Conspiracy theory:
Guy has a run in with pistonheads and then suffers a nasty "accident".
Car of choice for the "accident" - porsche. Which porsche fan has recently started working for pistonheads?
All I'm saying is be nice to the guys at pistonheads if you don't want a similar "accident".

Yes, but I'd be willing to bet that they can predict when it's going to happen. If there's a chance of rain (which normally there wouldn't really be), just don't take the slicks. Simple.California is quite big, and has weather just like everywhere else that isn't in a TV show.
