Things like the S-Series and the smaller engined Chims are fundamentally pretty reliable as specialist cars go. Obviously the big manufacturers can spend huge amounts of money on detail engineering and quality control that low-volume manufacturers can't, but basically most of the old school TVRs are a fairly stock Rover V8 or Ford V6 mounted to a well proven drivetrain on a simple backbone chassis.
Small niggles aren't unknown, but big issues are pretty rare. Insure it as a classic and don't do too many miles (at ~20mpg for a Chim) and they can be remarkably affordable cars to run.
So there's not really a catch.
I bought an S series TVR,last year, cheap entry to the TVR world, its got loads of little jobs to sort, but with the V6 Ford fuel injection lump in the front twin big bore exhausts, you get a lot of smiles, you and the onlookers. Need not spend the whole budget either, mine starts first time every time, the electric windows work when they want to and the wipers are painfully slow, but purchase price plus getting the jobs done will still be well within your budget. You can get Footman James Classic insurance limited mileage (3000) for just over 130 quid, road tax £221 for 12 months and I have not bothered to check MPG. . . . . . . . . Its Worth It. That doesn't stack up at all for that price - even with an S52 under the bonnet.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
