Id suggest most if not all Taxi companies would run a vehicle to a state where it's beyond economical maintenance or there's something costly wrong with it. Especially at the milage.

Its likely on its last legs
Indeed, as you will see plenty with a fleet of older reliable cars on moon mileage (Octavias and that), then a recycling of less reliable ones inbetween.

Why sell a 350k car for a tenth of what it would have cost only a few years ago unless it has some nasty engine related fragilities? The only thing I can think of is for those who have contractual obligations to only have cars x months old, like ULEZ taxis? Or ULEZ ones getting rid of diesels?

I know of garages that do car rentals on new cars, then wind back the clocks before selling them on, same as they do with their management cars.....

I have no idea of its true value, and it wouldn't interest me because diesel Jaguar is an appalling concept, but the fact remains that big Jaguars of the past twenty years have better survival rates than any of the German or Far Eastern brands.

Reads well that. Sounds like previous owner bailed before the big bills then current owner has spent quite a few quid on replacement engine etc. Could be a good car that but I've no idea what similar cars are worth.

That's a lovely thing though. I'd love one of these. When I get a job closer to home I'll be sorely tempted to have a look into a petrol V8 one, though perhaps not the supercharged fella.

I wouldn't touch that with someone else's bargepole!
Unknown 80k mile engine swapped in, where did that come from and what history and what proof of its mileage? Rest of the car has starship miles and will be a rattly old wonky bus. Sod that for 8 bags

Completely agree. You can buy a straight 2012 car with 90k for 12.5k

Another £4.5k. On top of your £8k budget.

Anyway, 2011 Jag XJ, 128k miles £8k on Autotrader. More realistic comparison.

I read this as:

- engine swap at 89k
- last May a big service costing £4,300

I read it that a new (reconditioned) engine was fitted that was showing 89k miles. I can't help but think the line "it owes me a fortune" is not the best line in an advert.

I did some work with the telematics team at ALD Automotive a couple of years ago. They are all extremely pleased that telematics capability is becoming standard to stop exactly that crap. At the time they used a 3rd party solution for customers that required it, but that is just on the cusp of changing. In future a condition of the lease will almost certainly be that the car reports back it's own mileage at the end of each trip.
I had an ALD car 2012 to 2016 that's how we reported our business mileage you couldn't scam anything.
Now got a LEX Autolease car and they have the same system.

All our work cars were fitted with black box recorders that not only recorded how far they were being driven, but also in what manner and whether they were being abused. They also recorded every journey and where it went, even if it exceeded a speed limit

The cars were all on fuel cards and every fill the mileage would be recorded which was used not just to tell the fleet manager when it was due a service but also to ensure their wasn’t a problem with it or the driver ( ie 499 identical Ford Focus all doing 40 mpg and one doing 20 mpg )

The technology is out there
