BMW are about the least reliable cars I've owned. I still look at 10 year old 730d's and want one though!

The American market is certainly unique. That car wouldn’t even be £1000 in the UK. Probably like £500

It’s nice to see Americans value their old cars. I see a lot of EG Civic videos on youtube; they all disappeared in the UK more than 10 years ago. Old fashioned Hondas and Toyotas like the Carina disappeared from British roads 15 years ago.... I miss old metal.
it's not unique, Britain is the oddball with ludicrously high levels of depreciation.

Look at used car prices in Germany.

15 year old corolla for 3k, something that would be 800 in the UK. At the end of the day its not what you pay its what you lose, although I woudl much rather have half of the cash tied up in a car.

This is showing my age, but there are some cracking cars available here:

1995 Camry v6 with 200k and still wants $2,800!

1989 Camry with changed engine - still want $2,500!

That’s insane. An anicent old Toyota with no equipment for 2.5k?!

Used cars have been way cheaper here than everywhere else for years. The British seem to love new and shiny only. Thats why our 2nd hand cars get exported. Even Germany buy our RHD cars if they're interesting enough like TVR. The only exception seems to be Japan which has a really strict MOT system. But now those used Japan cars imported to the UK are looking overpriced too.

Good thread this.
Just shows how much of a throw away attitude we have, clearly most cars are more than capable of going on far longer than we allow them to.
Over my years I've spoken to many people who are in the process of changing their car, commonly saying stuff like 'well its more than 3 years old now, its got 35k miles on it. Need a new one because its likely to become unreliable' All BS of course.laugh

Both Jags look to have worn it well, I thought those engines were unreliable according to the internet?

I think, according to the internet, that everything is unreliable, as told by your mate/cousin.

Tha X type ad feels authentic, even down to taking the pics on a phone from the same year.
I thought the contemporaneous Mondeo from the time was renowned ( i.e.the guy in Glasgow with the million mile taxi said it) for being better build than it's successor.

Near quarter million mile 205 GTI 1.9 for sale.

Looks nice enough, but as with all these old hot hatches, I'm sure there's more than a hint of Trigger's broom about it. I'm sure the original front seats were threadbare a long time ago.

Of the diesels I've had, and the people I know who've had them, all of them without exception have been more reliable when having miles piled on them and driven hard, and less reliable when mollycoddled and used sparingly. Modern diesels like to be used.
