Not sure if this is in the right forum so forgive me if not!..

i have a problem with my 08 Range Rover sport- after i drive 100 miles or so it starts to emit a burning/gassy smell from the engine which then comes in through the vents making it unbearable to drive.
I've consulted 2 roadside assistants and a local garage and no-one can find this fault,i even got told by the AA that is was the lacquer my details used when cleaning my car thats heating up and rubbing on the brake discs?!

i know many of you will suggest visiting a Land rover specialist but at the moment I'm being a tight arse and trying not to spend any more money on 'expert' opinions!

My guess is something under the bonnet is getting hot - I assume 100 miles of mostly motorway? Was the engine bay detailed?

No it wasn't just the exterior body work,my initial thought was someonethign catching but after checking everything and all the oils we can't see anything that could be 'rubbing' :/

It's something getting hot that isn't the engine I would guess - I was thinking maybe they'd left some cleaner on the engine block or something that had burnt off. Perhaps there's a bit of oil on the engine?

100 miles is a fair distance and I'd have expected most things to have warmed up well before that. Is this a regular trip you make? I'm wondering if it's more related to where or when it happens and what the car's doing at that point, rather than the time or distance since you set off.

Is it the 2.7 diesel?

I know they do smell when cold due to the diesel pre-heater emitting gases out of it's own exhaust but that only happens for a few minutes or so unless something is wrong with yours.

Check things like the air con pump (and alternator etc) are free-moving as if you don't use the air-con, they can seize up and the belt then slips and burns though this is generally on older cars.

Other than that, check that all hoses are away from the cooling fan or that no leads/cables are trailing on the exhaust manifolds.
