Petrol price in France vs. UK?
Discussion
Chaps,
Quickie. I'm off to France in the next few days. How much is juice there as opposed to here? (Super unleaded for preference, boggo unleaded if not.) I'm trying to decide whether to get to the UK ferry port with the tank nearly empty or whether to fill it up before we leave.
Thanks,
Oli.

I drove to the Alps last month and petrol was definitely dearer - well over €1.70 on the autoroutes, maybe €1.65-ish at the supermarkets. Not a huge amount but it adds up if you're doing 1500 miles. I filled up at Tesco Ashford before leaving, that got me to Geneva!
Really? Supermarket fuel is usually 10-20c per litre cheaper than on autoroutes. It certainly is on diesel anyway.CAPP0 said:

+1. The autoroutes petrol is very expensive, AND UTTER CRAP! After a recent trip I have come to the conclusion that paying extra for "super" unleaded is a waste of money on the autoroutes. It made my car feel very down on power. I'd guess it's because the french don't buy much of it, so it's left sitting in the tanks for months. I'll be bringing octane booster with me next time.

I'm off to Italy in a couple of weeks.
NL - D - CH - I
Apart from Switzerland it doesn't look like it is worth worrying about the diference.
Price of both unleaded and diesel for Italy from the table are in the lower bracket, in reality they are closer to 1.95/1.84 respectively now....NL - D - CH - I

My suggestion is to fill up as much as you can in Switzerland before passing the border.
Enrico
Prices in France have come down a couple of cents in the past week but there is now a gap of about 6c between 95 and 98 unleaded - it used to be just a cent or two.
Diesel in France has historically been a lot cheaper than the UK and it still is.
If you buy 95 unleaded in France and use a UK card the present exchange rate means it will be a couple of pee cheaper per litre than in the UK but not really enough difference to make it an issue.

Its notable Ed Balls has been banging on about the American economy in the last few days. They're the only ones growing with a 'balanced plan' etc but what he neglects to say is fuel in America is a third of the price of the UK which obviously makes for extremely different market conditions. The EU's default setting to raise money is to charge the motorist, we've heard on here recently about car tax in Ireland, Holland and Italy - all of which are basketcases. Co-incidence?

Really? A third of the price?US Gallon is 3.78 litres
US Average price for unleaded is currently close to $4 per gallon or $1.06 per litre
UK Gallon is 4.5 litres @ about £1.40 per litre
You can't use the exchange rate since if you live there there is no exchange rate. So...
US fuel costs about 1.06 monetary units per litre
UK fuel costs about 1.40 monetary units per litre
Ergo US fuel is about 75% of UK fuel costs.
Now lets talk about average MPG of US cars vs UK cars....
US average mpg for a car is about 33.8
http://www.bts.gov/publications/national_transport...
UK average mpg for a car is 37.87
http://www.fuel-economy.co.uk/stats.shtml
So per 100 miles a US car costs on avg (100/33.8) * 1.06 = 3.13 monetary units
and per 100 miles a UK car costs on avg (100/37.87) * 1.40 = 3.69 monetary units
So the ratio to actually run an average car in the US vs UK is %92. Pretty bloody close really.
Same can be said of most countries these days.
