Looking at going to a car auction. I have been looking on line at a few interesting cars but more than a few Im interested in say no log book.

How do you go about getting one and how do you you tax the car without it?

Is it too much hassle to buy a car without a log book?

Good question.

I'd have thought that it shouldn't be a problem provided the car is registered for road use and the logbook is simply "lost". I believe all you have to do is apply to DVLA for a replacement since if you've bought at auction it's very simple to prove your ownership. I did wonder whether you could do an MOT test search but it seems you need information from the V5 to achieve that - which is going round in a circle!

If the car has never been registered in UK (or has previously been written off) I imagine it would have to go through an IVA test or something like that before it could be registered.

A lot of the cars at auction will be repossessed I should think, so a perfectly sensible reason for not having the V5. However, since the cars have likely been repossessed the former owner might be a bit sniffy about signing the V5 over.

If it was repossessed it was never owned by the person it was taken from. It would have been owned by the finance company and as they have put it up for auction it wont be an issue.
If it was seized from the previous owner he wont have any rights to it either so no problems either way.

Cool so it seems there is no problem getting a registration document.

But what about tax? I assume the auction of whoever will cash in whatever tax is left, so will I be unable to tax it until the Registration docs are sent tome from the DVLA?

All I will have is proof I bought it from an auction and an insureance cert to take to teh post office. No reminder etc etc.
