Why the British Jealousy(?) and negativity, RE cars?
Discussion
More than once in the last month, "British Jealousy" has cropped up in conversation, and a third time in an email.
The negative remarks car owners receive tend to be amplified by either brand, cost/value, or 'flash factor' - Im not a huge fan of Porsche but woudlnt direct negativity at owners of the brand, or any car simply because they own the car.
A small excerpt (the third 'repeat of the sentiment' (in bold above) this month)) from a woman, an older email I stumbled upon in one of my folders: "After my Boxster, I bought Porsche Cayenne, a 911 and my last one was Cayman S. That was my favourite! Some horrible person through brake fluid all over it when I was away on holiday. Came back to find a streaky yellow car! Caught it on CCTV but police couldn’t identify who it was.
Why is it that this type of behaviour, and the verbal abuse that accompanies 'flash car ownership' in this country is such an integral part of the behaviour and psychological makeup of so many in England? Folks dont abuse others with 'upmarket' or expensive purchases overseas. In fact, they opposite will apply. Interest, polite curiosity and no negativity will flow.
Tired of the UK. Cant see it changing in a hurry, either. Back to the question... Why?!? I'll wager not everyone here is completely innocent of this verbal abuse either.

It's sad. Of all the countries I have lived in, the UK has by far the most petty and jealous behaviours. Don't know the reason for it, but at a guess, the British pre-occupation in media and general day-to-day society with the class system must have a part to play. That and the welfare state. Everything can be blamed on that in some way

My cheap as chips MX5 gets keyed most likely because it's clean, black, and a convertible. Jeez i'm such a flash barstid
Society makes me belm at times. I'm sure if I had an £8k polo it wouldn't get touched!!

The old adage "Socialism is the philosophy of Envy, Capitalism is the philosophy of Greed"
Still holds true.
Sadly many miserable jerks put their energy into ruining someone elses fun. The British disease.
Undoubtedly a different character flaw to much of the rest of the world. But every nation has its malcontents. In one form or another.

In addition, they never aspire to anything or have ambitions beyond having more children to ramp up the benefits so are unlikely to have 'nice things' unless acquired by nefarious means. They see someone with a nice car and feel resentful hence the vandalism. Yeah since I got my MR2 a few scratches have appeared on it. Yes it is a nice example and to some it might look flash/expensive but it didn't cost a lot at all and even if it was its no reason for some jealous scrote bag to scratch it. I was once turning into a road with my window down and heard an old woman say 'who does he think he is'. God I hate living in a st area surrounded by sponging s.

I raised this a while back (3 page thread).Indeed. Massive contrast to the States where success is applauded and aspired to.
This forum gets stories posted up on a frequent basis regarding owners in 'flash' convertibles getting abuse for no reason at all.
Luckily in my old convertible, responses have always been positive. I'd hate to be driving a new 911, roof down in a town centre. Just wouldn't be worth the bother tbh. Genuine shame.
I'm not convinced about this being a British thing, you seem to suggest that a Porsche would be safer if parked in a downmarket suburb of Washington or Paris than a similar area of London and I'm not sure it's true.
What we do have in this country is a particular talent for talking ourselves down and convincing ourselves that society is going to the dogs. We've been saying such things for many generations but thankfully I still have no desire to go woof or eat pedigree chum

Some people are stuck in their rut and have no hope/drive to better themselves and have no hope to achieve decent things. Through petty jealousy they can't stand it when others work hard and manage to afford a new car or whatever as it highlights their own pityful lives.
Cars are an easy target as they are left on the streets. If they could, they would be damaging your new kitchen, hifi or whatever.
bds the lot of them.

Noo Labour and the left pushed and still do push the politics of envy. Welcome to the results....generations brought up to believe that other people having something you don't "isnt fair" and fk all consequences if you decide to get all jealous on the "nasty rich" people.
Yep. I notice that the latest campaign is against company big wigs and how much CEOs are being paid. If you earn over a million in England you're basically the worst person alive. How dare someone work their asses off to gain the highest position in a company to then be paid more than someone that works on the factory floor. XitUp said:
It's nothing to do with jealousy.
What is it about boring middle englanders that makes them think that any time something bad happens to them it must be because someone is jealous?
My mum has an Octavia, my dad has a Micra. Both have been keyed. Nothing to do with jealousy.
Whilst there is clearly some jealousy about, this is very true. What is it about boring middle englanders that makes them think that any time something bad happens to them it must be because someone is jealous?

I think a lot of it is a result of living on top of each other. I often see someone in a memorable motor doing something silly, and then see the car again in an NCP a few days later. I never quite understand why people in vans (or 4x4s which every sodding fitness instructor or yoga practitioner in Surrey seems to need) with their name and mobile phone number plastered down the side often behave so badly.
More traffic = more annoyance, more annoyance = more likely to try to steal that extra car length, more seemingly "arrogant" behaviour = more vandalism ?
