The 07MY Impreza I ran a few years back used to enjoy its oil.
Was surprised at the time, but just assumed it was a Boxer thang ?
Nope your impreza had a problem. Could have been something simple and cheap to fix like a rocker cover gasket or something more time consuming like head gaskets or crank oil seal.

My impreza rb5 uses no oil at all, and my legacy only used some when the head gaskets were weeping, once sorted "hey presto" no longer used a drop.

Is anywhere near 30mpg doable in the Foresters?

I'd quite like to get one next (or an Impreza wagon) but tales of horrendous mpg puts me off, it'll be used for 90% town journeys.
Not a chance. I think the range on a full tank of juice doing a long run is around 300 miles.

I'm the wrong person to ask tbh, mine gets so little use, I've forgotten what it does!

I've been getting about 28/9mpg on my non-turbo Forester, 20 mile commute and longer runs to go mountain biking. For the type of vehicle I think thats fairly respectable.

... BUT a boxer engine asking for oil is a sign that things are nearing their end.
Is it though? Not doubting your competence, but I was under impression that 'they all do that' (TM). My Legacy 2.0 (non-turbo) certainly has a healthy appetite for oil, but I never considered this could be a sign of a worn engine for that particular model... hmm... need to do some research.

Oh, and (to return back on topic somewhat) Subaru spare part prices are somewhat eye-watering and the alternatives for non-sporty models aren't all that plentiful in my experience.
Could oil use be a symptom of "oval" bore for a boxer engine? If oval bore, would you need a new block and how much would it be to fixed?

It was ok, bad bits were crap interior and poor fuel economy 20mpg if your lucky.
What's the problem with 20mpg? I thought most petrol, mid-weight, 4x4 estate gives that kind of mpg anyway and is typical of this type of cars. With it is a petrol, heavy-weight, 4x4 estate, it will be around 13 mpg. I guess it is all about expectation ...

However, I hate the small fuel tank they fit to most vehicles since the 90s. What's the problem with having 80L tank like in BMW E34 or 75L tank in Vauxhall Omega? Less visit to the pump and more miles per tanks smile

Got 34mpg from 2.0XT (turbocharged) and over 400 miles from a full tank

The whole MPG is convoluted, i have got 35 -40 mpg from modern diesels cars (Audi, BMW, peugeot etc) and 25 - 30 from petrol hatchbacks in a various amount of hatchbacks etc on a around 35 mpg commute mixture of a and b roads.

20 - 25 mpg is not really that bad, and why is that the focus when you lose more money in parts and depreciation.

A grand is good value but you can get better than this thou.

I bought one just like that one back in 2006 as a toy vehicle for my kit car.

It was soo practical with the heated seats etc, that I actually enjoyed driving it.
After using it in the snow that first year I kept another five years and went out for fun in the snow as it never ever got stuck.

It's no rocket ship but you could go anywhere and park anywhere.

Ever since I got my fingers badly burned on an S Reg Impreza Turbo that dropped a bottom end,(it still owes me 2 grand)... Im afraid I have developed a pathelogical dislike of subarus!! Hence I would avoid this one like the plague!!

I thought the idea of shedding was to buy a motor to run for the next year. Well you can instantly add another 25% to your budget for 12 month's tax.

Most may, but the 2.5XT I have just changed at 78k miles never used one drop of oil between services, I owned it from new.

Fantastic car though, unbelievably quick for what it was.

as any 1.5 + engine before 2001. Not really a valid argument. The whole point of shedding is to the run the car with minimal expenditure on deprecation and running costs.

On mpg, my S turbo (auto) does high 20s, mostly longer runs but not gently driven.

It sounds much like my later model Forester; noisy rear suspension (when towing it makes some strange noises that no one can find the cause), it drinks oil (and has done for the last 4 years) and it is thirsty (21mpg). It has done 135k miles and everything still works, but is just starting to cost money. Have learned with Subarus that you go through a cost pain barrier, and once through all returns to normal. But it is painful while it lasts...

Main thing to watch on these:

Cambelt/Tensioners - £200 for parts plus £200 labour

Rear shocks - non-SLS replacements - £200 for parts plus £200 labour

Just sold a JDM Forester S/TB circa 240 bhp. It was a fantastic car, completely reliable - incredible cross country pace (I upgraded the rear ARB to an Impreza STI version and the door handles stopped touching the road in the corners!). It had no problems with the uk potholes and the last 2 winters snow. I even managed to keep up with the cars below in a Pistonheads hoon once!!!

You'd not bother - you'd get an engine out of an Impreza which someone rolled into a field smile

I'm all about shedding (driving it until it simply stops working - with only sensible maintenance done meanwhile) and things like oil usage tend to ring alarms with me (because oil doesn't disappear, it's going SOMEWHERE and Imprezas simple aren't known for using it).

I'd love one of these - truth be told - but we're being a BIT silly digging under the £1K mark - as someone said, 25% more just to tax it for a year - let alone anything else.

A nicer/tidier one with full T&T would make far, far more sense I suspect.
