What I'm hoping is that Ferrari will respond by making a competitor to the 911, perhaps with a V6 to coincide with the introduction of V6's into F1?

That's how the "junior" Ferraris started out after all, with the 246 Dino, but the V8 cars seem to have outgrown that role comprehensively. But imagine how well a Porsche-priced modern incarnation of the Dino would sell... makes sense to me at least!

Wait a minute. It's going to be 4 door, 4 seat AND mid-engined? How to heck are they going to do that?

Getting a bit crowded over at Porsche... Boxster, Cayman, 911, Panamera, Cayenne and coming soon the 918 Supercar, baby Boxster, the baby Cayenne and now this Panamera Coupe jobby.

It does sound like VW are influencing a bit much.

Keep it it simple please, Porsche!

And why would they do it?

If the "purists" start on about mid-engine being better balanced, I'd be asking whether that is with 1, 2, 3 or 4 80kg people on board too. I still can't see any advantages over the Panamera layout.

I think it's pretty obvious why VAG are developing such an outlandish platform.

Packaging wise how is a 4-seat mid-engined (everyone seems to be confusing mid with rear???) platform ever going to make sense for a mainstream-ish car? Unless it's being developed to underpin the new Lamborghihi Urus SUV. Tadaaaaa....all of a sudden it makes sense!

I reckon the current Urus concept's proportions are a deliberate red herring and why techinical details on it are so scant. A platform such as this would make for an SUV with devastating performance both on AND offroad. It's so unique and bonkers that it works, and would be a slam dunk for Lambo.

Please Lambo, redeem yourselves by doing something this crazy.....it's in your blood!
I hope you're right - that would make the Urus make a lot more sense than it does now.

I can see a market for a SWB Pan, that would be a 2+2 GT car with a layout as per the 928.

Following the more 'natural' expectation of Porsche doing a four door 'mid engine' super coupe.

With the engine truly mid mounted with seats in front and behind the engine - at least the passengers can have true multi zone heating effortlessly, they may even be able to cook lunch/dinner as they travel ?

As for safety - with either a full frontal impact or full rearward impact, the occupants can be more effectively crushed into the engine, saving the engine from the full effect of crash damage....you've got to appreciate the benefits of the location !

Oh well it could be worse, you may want to buy a BMW 6 series coupe or dare I say the newly announced 6 Gran Coupe.... At least you can compete with the Panamera for ugliness on a level playing field !!
