The thing I do is just get a test drive, and if at no point during the drive do you feel like 'I need this car' then its not for you, 'wanting' and 'needing' are my yes and no's.

Yep!

Also, if a dealer suggests a straight swap, basically you're writing him a cheque for £2000 in the value differential. By your own admission these cars are hanging around on dealer forecourts at the moment, so their values are still dropping. Maybe if you waited a little while you'd get one with so much left in financial reserve that you could afford to buy yourself a smart daily driver too.
I think it it more of a car of the fact my car being a 2.0l will be easier for him to sell in this market and thus aglow him to realise the profit built into his price for the M3.

His is up for 24k, mine is worth 21k to me, so I think the differential is going the other way.

A 10 year old M3 at 24k??? Aren't they more like half that?

Euros I am in Cyprus.

12k tax, registration and shipping on a basic 12k UK purchase on the BMW.

Audi, 6k tax, registration and shipping on a basic 15k UK purchase.

Uplift is determined by engine size, age and co2.

Used car values are based on UK prices here as most used cars are imported from there.

Ah right, makes sense now. That's a lot of addons, makes car buying an expensive process

He's a dealer, QED the deal must be in his favour in some way. I think we can rule out any special interest in your car, per se, beyond the financial.

Maybe, although he may feel that it would be easier to sell in this climate, and get some cash in. He has had the BMW for months.
