McLaren upgrades MP4-12C to 625hp

McLaren distracts from niggles with a free power boost alongside nav upgrade

McLaren is due to launch an upgraded version of its MP4-12C later this year, with power pushed up by 25hp to 625hp, though the engine re-map won't affect the car's economy or emissions figures.

The letter sent to customers
The letter sent to customers
The news has been revealed in a letter from company MD Antony Sheriff to existing owners, offering a free power upgrade for their cars. While McLaren is at it, it will also add a few features to the car, including a remote-opening passenger door and tweaks to the sound system.

This is of course the second time that McLaren has twiddled with the 12C, the first one being to add a bit of extra 'passion' to the car.

The latest upgrade will be available from October 2012 and, for those getting it retro-fitted, Sheriff says coyly that "in order to minimise the time you spend apart from your 12C, we plan to deliver this upgrade package at the same time as we update your IRIS system". For that, read 'we will actually make the sat-nav work...'.

McLaren won't tell us anything more about the changes yet, but promises that full details of the upgrades will be coming soon.

Actually the IRIS upgrade is to install the "Ron Dennis" voice.

No credit to the original article from which you took the letter scan from? For shame...

Nice that the upgrades are of no cost, very inclusive to the customers. I'm sure that some well known Italian or German sportscar rivals would gladly charge for an "Upgrade Pack".

Good show McLaren!

'Programmable engine note' WTF or am I miss reading that?

I just can't believe the amount of time it's taken to sort out the IRIS stuff but I guess they don't want to call the cars back until it 100% works!

I wouldn't.

I was watching them racing at Silverstone (on TV) and they still look deathly dull for a supercar.

Not sure I'd bother with something like this anyway, even if I won big on Euromillions. The 458/Aventador don't do much for me either.

A cynic might wonder if McLaren aren't doing this because they don't have the kind of loyalty that enables them to charge...

You have to applaud McLaren for this.

Whereas Porsche and Ferrari would have no doubt thrown in some new alloys and released a 'special edition' for 30k extra over list, McLaren are doing it for free and then some.

If I had the disposable income for one of these cars, this kind of thing would likely sway me in McLaren's direction.

clap

I parked near one of these on a recent trip to the Lake District.
Had a chat with the owner (my opening line was `Ok , you win.`) who had literally just picked it up. It was Mclaren orange and absolutely stunning , photos do not do it justice.
Next day in the Yorkshire Dales parked next to a Ferrari 458 and I was like `Meh`.

I really, really want to be on first name terms with the guys at McLaren.

(has Ron recorded the sat nav instructions? that'd be brilliant!)

I had three brand new TVR's, Nuff said! I am still a fan, just lost interest by all the failures i had to endure. Quirks for a new model i can deal with; its how the maker handles the problems.

Big thumbs up to Mclaren, customer do matter!
I would buy one, just dont have the cash frown
Would be in Orange, just in case they want a donate one for CITP use

Here's a translation from RonSpeak for everyone:

Dear **customer number 000004 of 0000010**,

I would once again like to thank you for being one of the first people to help ease our cashflow issues, and to join us on this embarrassing journey as an under developed sports car manufacturer. As an early 12C owner, I would like to inform you of a few fixes for some major issues we've discovered which I'll dress up to sound exciting and beneficial.

As a company that plays hugely on it's racing success to try and distract from the fact we misjudged our vehicle attributes, we are continuously having to fix shortcomings with our cars. Being the owner of one of our prototypes, I would strongly suggest you have the following fixes which we will be applying to actual production cars later this year. To make it sound like this is exciting and beneficial, I will say you're getting this for free.

The power output of your 12C will increase by 25PS to a value which is distractingly class leading. Our development team has re-engineered the mapping of the 12C engine to give you the performance and driveability it should have had in the first place. I will now distract you further with some blurb about CO2 emissions and unacheivable MPG figures.

In addition, we will add a number of features to your car that we had planned to put on, but due to various system stability issues with the early prototypes, couldn't. These are all the usual things we would have discovered anyway had that pesky bank manager not 'forced' us to sell prototypes to the public! Your retailer will be able to give you a full rundown of the marketing blurb we have come up with to hide this.

In order to further make it sound like you're part of the 'the team' and getting something for nothing, we also plan to include the much delayed, and frequently promised update to your IRIS system. Yes. You really will get it this time.

Both (and by both I mean all 50 updates, but 50 sounds really bad so I decided that 'both' in this context actualy means 2 lots of 25) will be available at some point towards the end of this year. I'll say October 2012 now, because it makes it sound like I know when it'll be, when in reality it probably won't all be done by then. Your retail representive (also known as a salesman in the rest of the world) will not be in contact shortly to discuss in less detail.

Thanks again for helping to fund the first few prototypes.

Funny that, I've seen both in the flesh, and I thought the complete opposite.

The McLaren looked plain boring, I almost gazed straight passed it with it parked either side to to 02 plate ford focus and a Toyota Corolla. Says a lot.

Now the Fezza was just stunning, and the noise cloud9

It's how a supercar SHOULD look and sound.

Ah....but beauty is in the eye of the buyer. Somehow I cant imagine that person referring to his Maclaren as a "Mezza"....
