Would rather have a British engineered car with some teething problems than an Italian one that could catch fire.

If i could afford to buy either of course.

Rumour is that they're now shutting down production of UK spec cars to firm up residuals.

Ha, ha, ha! That'll upset the McLaren fans wink

It does seem like a bit of a song and dance about things, given that it sounds like a Windows Service Pack upgrade, with some extra power chucked in to sweeten the deal! Electronic updates are often given out free by car manufacturers, it's just that they're carried out by the dealer during servicing without a fuss, so this sounds more like a bit of PR guff than anything else. Still, at least they're doing it and those original owners who still actually have their cars, will apprecaite the letter from Woking.

Slightly O/T... I see that with advertised prices now dipping into the £160Ks, the bubble has burst on these cars. That didn't last long. I'm no fan of the 458, but it's interesting that you still need £180K to get a 2010 RHD car.

Don't get me wrong, it's very good that McLaren are happy to do the updates for free, but the marketing blurb they use makes me laugh!

It's the same when any manufacturer offers an update which is (often) either saftey critical or some kind of major issue.....they always dress it up to seem like it's benefitting the customer when actually it's fixing something they either didn't forsee or didn't experience during development.

Oh...and I thought the Jubilee celebrations were excellent and worth every penny by the way! wink

I have to say that having seen the 458/MP4-12C and the Aventador in real life driven at pace.

I'd note
1. the Lambo looks amazing
2. the Lambo sounds amazing
3. the Lambo has a v12
4. did say the Lambo was the best?

458 lovely car
MP4-12C nice too

Out of the three I'd take the lambo.
If that were not an Option I'd take my £180k and spend it on....a 911RSR wth a GTR for bashing about in.

458 please.

The McLaren does absolutely nothing for me. It looks so dull and boring, I'd be hard pressed not to lose it in a car park instantly.

Is the Aventador not a league above therefore incomparable? I'd compare the MP4-12C and 458 to the LP560-4 personally.

Having driven both of 'em, the McLaren is in a whole other league of usability. The Aventador has the drama angle pretty well covered, but sometimes you just want to get in and drive the car without being bounced all over the place and don't want an an engine that fires up with so many revs it wakes the whole neighbourhood. There's a lot to be said for utility, even in a supercar.

you wouldn't buy this for practicality though, e.g. it's got a bigger boot than the lambo? surely the point of a supercar is a toy that will set your trousers on fire...and a 458 will literally do that for you! (or so i've heard)

Funny that, I've seen both in the flesh, and I thought the complete opposite.

The McLaren looked plain boring, I almost gazed straight passed it with it parked either side to to 02 plate ford focus and a Toyota Corolla. Says a lot.

Now the Fezza was just stunning, and the noise cloud9

It's how a supercar SHOULD look and sound.
Ah....but beauty is in the eye of the buyer. Somehow I cant imagine that person referring to his Maclaren as a "Mezza"....
Yes, no one would call a Macca a Mezza.

You might well buy it for praticality though - you want a supercar you can use daily that doesn't stand out too much. A black or dark grey MP4-12C would fit the bill quite well I reckon.

Still can't wrap my head around the McLaren, having seen a few in the metal I'm unimpressed with the way they look and how they sound (in comparison to other supercars). I'm certainly not anti British cars and not averse to a car that catches fire... I'd love a TVR or a Noble (even a lotus if I fitted in one properly) but if I had the money this would not make the shopping list.

I'm with George here, the Aventador is £300k plus, the MP4-12C is half that, yet it still got you comparing them wink

I don't care what your preference is, MP4-12C or 458, surely McLaren's approach should be applauded - too many manufacturers would sit back, acknowledge the fault and move on, failing in the process, but McLaren haven't, they've acknowledged the fault, provided fixes for free, provided upgrades for free and are still working to make their customers happy. To build a car from the ground up that can even be compared to the 458 is surely a huge achievement, ok, so they've made a couple of mistakes, but they're trying to rectify them at what must surely be a huge cost to them.
