Surely the sale of any Jukes at all show a triumph of marketing over everything else ?

I saw a woman at toys-r-us the other day looking rather silly attempting to squeeze a few modest items into the tiny boot of one. It looked to be about as small as a Micra boot - maybe smaller ?

I would be genuinely embarrassed to be seen in one !

I love it, people tend to forget the segment but each to their own, the UK has always been ridiculously resistant to change and it shows on the comments on PH for the likes of the Juke etc. Yet they sell and the sell very well, funny that isn't it. Ignorance is bliss eh.

All this talk about Jukes being ugly or not...I don't get it. What is the point of the Juke? It's like a smallish SUV right? what's the point? It doesn't seem practical? Is it cheap or something? How does this car fit into the world?

Well, no. Very, very few people would agree that the E9x series is 'truly frightful looking'. That's why you see loads on the road; because your opinion is diametrically opposed to popular opinion.

Sort of, it's more a supermini on stilts, the only advantage it would have over a normal car in "off road" terms would be the higher ride hight. Yes it is cheap for what it is. It is fairly practical, yes the boot isn't enormous but there's a lot of underfloor storage in there so not as small as it may seem. If you fold the back seats down you've got a nice flat load area which can take a full sized pallet for example.

It's good value, fun to drive around town where it feels very alert and chuckable (although not so good on a back road), really well specced and comfortable.

About the Nismo, if they really want to make it into a "hot hatch" they're going to need to spend some money on the suspension, and I don't just mean sticking a set of lowering springs on the thing. The damping isn't very good at all for quick driving, it runs out of ideas and starts hopping about on trickier roads driven quickly.

I had a 1.6 N/A version as an enforced company car for 6 months - truly the worst car ever! Made a Qashqai look good - and that was boring! The only positive thing I can say about 2 years worth of enforced Nissan company cars is that they were 100% reliable (65,000 miles)....but the Juke....just awful!

What didn't you like about it? The QQ is from a class above in every way, including price.

But you see loads of Jukes on the road as well, and people are calling them ugly?

I think the reason both sold, is that ugly is better than bland, which is almost always the only other option amongst mainstream cars. I quite like BMW for being brave with their styling when everyone else was producing slab-sided boxes, even if I'm not overly keen on the results; I like Nissan for being brave with their styling, but in that case I also happen to quite like the results in a "so ugly it's good" sort of way. Bit like the Alfa SZ/RZ, I suppose.

I'd take the the current top of the range 4wd with a bit more power and a seat that goes back a bit further. None of this Nismo trying too hard bollix.

I rather like them.

Ok i'll admit to forgetting about the 370z/350z. (i do like them) But IMO everything outside Nissans performance range is at best average, and in the case of the Juke (with or without the Nismo kit) just plain dreadful.

However there is nothing wrong with my 2 most recent cars so bore off!!!!!!!!!!

I thought I did say what I think the reasons are - that the cars don't look the same as everything else on the road (or at least didn't when launched). Both entered market sectors which were traditionally highly unimaginative, in terms of styling; and both were, in conventional terms, thoroughly ugly.

Personally I think the Juke pulls it off better than the 3-series because it has a sort of cartoonishness about it - the 3-series had just enough "normalness" to somehow manage to be both dull and ugly at the same time. Obviously that's just personal opinion, though. They're both poorly proportioned and oddly detailed cars by conventional measures.

I always thought the E92 was a particular shame, because the two-door E46 was quite a handsome car.

I dont see the E90 as that different from the E46, yes there is more detail to the E90 as in "flame surfacing" which I was not that keen on but you can see the lineage. The Juke on the other hand is radically different from any other Nissan apart from those lights on the top which are similar to those on the Micra but look even more hideous.

Everyone blames Bangle for BMW design direction since the E65 7 series onward but that came out around 2001 but he had been in that job since 1992 so headed the E46 too as well as E39 etc

Bigger than a Micra boot iirc.

She's obviously a tard then as the boot floor can be rotated backwards (sits flush with the rear seats) so it reveals the compartment beneath to allow you to fit a load more in.

In the interests of balance we can take a weeks camping equipment for 2 in ours no problem without struggling for space. We often go and buy 3-4 big bags of logs and put them in the boot with only the luggage board moved.

With the back seats down we got a garden table, parasol and chairs in a few weeks ago too.

However, if we had sprogs it wouldn't be ideal and would become a fair bit more cosy.

It makes me a little bit sad that an awesome name like Nismo has nothing else to put their name on than a bloody Juke. Come on Nissan, give us a hot hatch or a sports coupe they can do something with!
