I just don't know which way to go with my next car

I have been looking at a WRX rather than an STI and for comparable age and mileage they are approximately half the price of the R32.
I had the same dilemma about 18 months ago and went for the Impreza (an '04 Impreza WRX Wagon) for that very reason (I was looking at an Impreza or a mk4 R32 though if that's an option)? The Impreza is pretty unbeatable for the money in terms of performance per pound. It's the fastest car I've had by far (and that list includes a Corrado VR6), very surefooted and quite comfortable and easy to live with, although expect low 20s mpg. It also got me down an untreated country road with some pretty steep inclines on normal tyres without fuss last winter. You could go for an Evo, which is probably sharper to drive but would be very firm in comparison and even more expensive to run. I once had a mkV Golf GT TDI 4MOTION as a company car which was fairly quick and a nice drive. They exist but are quite rare. Is that an option? Other than that, a petrol X-Type is a good shout. My 87-year old grandfather-in-law picked up an '05 2.5 sport with low miles for about the same price as a similarly aged Impreza and that has 4WD. I wouldn't really say that it is any bigger than an impreza TBH. I must admit that I quite fancy having a hoon in it but he hasn't let me yet! white_goodman said:

The Mk4 R32 would be fine, if the Mk5 didn't exist, but it's such an update looks wise that I don't think I'd be happy with a Mk4. I have considered Evos, but for my price range, they are all so molested I don't feel happy buying one. I will have a look out for the Golf you mentioned, never owned a diesel but nothing particularly against them. I'll also see what X-Type I can get for my money.Victoria VW said:

Possibly too big but only a bit over budget and a lot of car for the money. How about a Vauxhall Insignia VXR (which is very quick and 4WD I believe)!Caulkhead said:
Oh yes it is! Like the Mazda 6 MPS some torque is always transmitted to both axles except when the handbrake is applied.

It's certainly no Land Rover, but I suspect the off-road performance will be adequate for your needs and the on-road handling is vastly superior.

It's confusing, even the brochure says it switches between front wheel drive but can transfer up to 50% of the power to the back. I wonder if the older ones had a different set up?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOWGq1B8C84

Car A. and Car B. - identical but one is AWD and one is FWD.
You coast around a corner, 0WD, which car has more grip?
Same.
Are you actually replying to anyone, or is this just a rather meaningless post to try and confuse the Op?You coast around a corner, 0WD, which car has more grip?
Same.
-Who coasts around corners??
-If you are in gear and don't have the clutch depressed then drive is still being transmitted to all wheels with AWD (drive system dependent). So under engine breaking the car will feel and behave differently to a 2wd vehicle under engine braking.
-AWD is about traction not grip. They are not the same thing.
I would highly recommend you have a look at this WRX at Nick Johnson's http://www.nickjohnsonmotorco.co.uk/used-cars/suba...
I would buy this in a heartbeat.
