there is an amusing "point" made on here which went if you don;t want your car dented just buy another cheapo to run for those sorts of jobs... WTF??? Sorry but running a 2nd car is beyond a lot of us on here financially (both in terms of extra running costs and insurance) and in relation to available parking frown

Not read the whole thread, but to summarise;

People who inappropriately park in P&C, disabled et al - ends of bells

People who are precious of their car (me) can; take another car if you're lucky enough to have one, take your child to use the spaces correctly, Internet shop, or if I'm out in my P&J and need to go to Sainsburys I find the parking space that has the hatchings where kerbs used to be and park half on them, hurtng nobody.

I agree with one of the last comments about being brought up properley and respecting other people, even if they don't necessarily show the same amount of respect back

Perhaps doesn't work for everybody but my 2nd car costs me absolutely nothing - it's low value and probably still worth more than I paid, more economical so I save on fuel on short journeys, saves on depreciation because there's less wear and tear on my other car, saves on insurance because I can use a specialist policy for my other car where one of the stipulations is that it must be my "second car" (in combination it's cheaper than insuring the Aston on its own) and saves on stress of dealing with careless idiots who can't park and/or avoid damaging other cars! Ok, there's doubled tax and servicing, but both are cheap for my 2nd car and are offset by the other benefits. It also gives me the "freedom" to own a two seater.

Man maths that stands objective questioning! I take your point on the parking though smile

i worked it out once, properly, and running an m3 and a clio worked out cheaper than just running an m3 for the journeys i did.

bizarrely, the biggest cost of running the clio was the insurance, as you can't use ncb on 2 cars. seeing as it's my ncb, and i can only drive one car at a time, i was a bit aggrieved by that. understand it if you started adding others to a policy...hmmmm.

Yes and what about all the people who can't afford to run a Clio and an m3? They have to run a Clio only... and they need to be just as careful with it as you are with your 'good' car as they also probably can't afford to waste money fixing the clio when some fat cow rams it with a trolley in Tesco.

All the people saying 'just run two cars' are deluded about what goes on the real world.

Chill out / take the chip off your shoulder! That's not what I was saying and not what jaedba was saying - we were both just recounting how two car ownership can sometimes stack up....this is PH after all! Quite different to saying "just run two cars" as a solution for all car park woes. Can't be bothered to check back but suspect others were similarly just saying how running a snotter helped them.

There are various people (in this thread and others) basically saying "if you don't want your main car to get damaged, have another car just for mundane journeys".

To me it just shows complete detachment from reality... most people simply can't afford to run two cars of any description.

Well maybe if you can afford a nice lovely car then you may also be able to afford a stbox to go with it. I think the point you're trying to make is most people have to make do with just the one ordinary car which if anything means more to them than the M3 the other guy has at home in the garage, because they only have the one car.

Maybe the guy with the M3 hasn't always had an M3, but has always cared similarly about whatever car he had, irrespective of its value?

I have...and I still take care when parking my runaround. Fact is though, repair costs on it are significantly lower, so it worries me less. Someone drove into the driver's door when it was parked up - I got a replacement in the correct colour for £15 and fitted it..can't tell at all. If someone had done this to my other car, this just wouldn't be an option and it would've probably cost nearer 100x that.

If they look female or old, steer clear.

If it's a Honda Jazz/Vaux Agila/Daewoo Matiz, find a different parking area.

Park in the censored or Parent and baby spaces and if anyone questions it politely tell them you're collecting your elderly mother/grandmother (adapt to fit) or meeting your wife and kids in there.

I've also found the stty parking only happens in Tescos or Morrisons. If you go to Waitrose you find a better class of people that actually respect other people's possessions.
But not who respect other people's disabilities.
Which one is a disability? Being female or being old? Or having kids?

Exactly. My clio is still parked in the sort of spaces we're talking about, i don't mind walking a bit further.

it's one area of domestic finance ffs. why cast judgement? smoking 40 fags a day costs c £450 a month the last time i looked, that'd pay for a nice 2nd car.... cue someone asking what's that got to do with it.... smile

As I'm getting on a bit (a bit leggy) and I'm a father, I'm going for answer number 1. Female ;-)

That point referred to his other, even more distasteful, early post.

This.

When I had the vectra before it exploded, I used to be careful with it to a point (400£ it cost me) but I was completely relaxed about it. Had people banging their doors against it, with me inside, couldn't care less! (the risk of facing 4 blokes, same size as me, totally pissed about their lack of care, was too high)

Or when a girl that would match the description on this thread, parked next to me in an empty car park, then realized how stupid that was and proceeded to hit me twice trying to take her car somewhere else... She pretended nothing happened, and when I knocked on her window, she started to cry like it was the end of the world. Told her not to worry about it... Too much hassle...

Having a stbox as a 2nd car just not care, was the best. Well worth the laaaaarge investment of... 400£...

Service? Non existent. When it stopped, sold for parts, made 250£ out of it.

I try to park away from others as best i can. Not always possible but i do my best and so far i have been ok.

I have seen some really poor parking and even saved someones car from a random stray trolley.

Its a sign of the times that people do not respect other people property rage
