Fantastic cars. thumbup

Had mine 3 years and love it. Moved up from a Carrera and a Boxster S before that. Drive one, hit full boost and your sold.

As mentioned though, they are good value, but there can be big bills on them. Rads and condensors are a common replacement, that's the best part of £2k all in.

Make sure any car you look at has had those done, or has meshes fitted over the air intakes. Clutches are going at this age / mileage, around £1k - £1.5k depending where you go and if there's any extra's needed.

Look out for the exhaust bolts and turbo heat shields. I've just had all mine done and replaced both Turbo's, oil pipework, catch pots and NRV's at the same time.

A big bill, but I looked around at chopping the car in. Couldn't really find anything I liked more for the money. So now I've got an absolute minter.
Agreed, but one thing to add is that if you can twirl the spanners then you can save yourself a fortune. I've had my '04 plate for over 5 years now and replaced consumables including plugs and coil packs plus the obligatory 3 front water rads and two condensors in addition to upgrading turbos, exhaust, brakes, manifolds, engine & transmission mounts etc...etc. Truth is, it ain't that difficult even though some would lead you to believe there is some mysterious black art involved and charge you accordingly.

I love the fact all those posting would love this 911 but the 996 is "unloved", whilst the Porsche beards get all misty eyed and spend 40 grand on a 993 I think the 996 Turbo is good value and comes with proper water cooling, like big boys cars do !

I suspect for most of us the air cooled thing and the hallowed versions of 911 is a bit Emperors New Clothes for most of us who would sell a kidney for this 996 and love it to bits, must be terrible for the cognoscenti to be so jaded that a 996 turbo is boring so we will leave them to their 300k RS models which must be fantastic but for the average PHer this is a very desirable car, hell I even enjoy my four grand 944 Cabriolet, it is just different markets, I am just glad there is some poverty Pork out there for us bottom feeders.

Yep, I think in any realm, you tend to live vicariously through others postings and miss out on your own path to deciding you need a 911 2.7 RS or whatever, really we need to go through the levels ourselves. It is like a guy at work who knows everything about cycling, every part, every tip yet rarely actually throws a leg over a bicycle.

As a PCGB member I've owned various 911's for a total of 13+ years so have a bit of experience in them but all said this is only my opinion. The 996 was possibly Porsche's best selling 911 and subsequently flooded the market, there's gazillions of them for sale, it's is generally recognised as being one of the most unloved 911's of all times, the 964 being second to it. beauty is the eye of the beholder and for someone looking for outright performance for less money they are a fantastic bargain. Someone looking for a proper 911 they are not the one to buy. As has already been said on this thread, I went to the launch of the 996 at the motor show the first impression when I saw it on the stand was the flat lines of the side profile and those bloody awful fried egg headlights. I later saw it at my local Porsche Centre, the first impression when I sat in it was the plastic cheap and nasty interior.

These have dropped the guts on £100k to sub £20k for a reason, they are likely to fall further.

If your just looking for a bargain 911 and prepared to lose serious money in it's further depreciation go for a 996, if you're looking for a pucker 911 to hold or even gain in value, don't.....another 'don't' is making a comparison between these and 997 simply because their isn't one.
Odd that you think the 964 is unpopular, from my experience they're second in popularity to the 993. I do remember 964 prices falling sharply many years ago, but now they've made steady gains in value over more recent years. Something that I'd predict for well cared for 996s.

C4S every time - preferably in that tasty dark blue they came in, and with the sports exhaust. Great looking car, far more special than your alternatives IMHO.

It'd be a coin flip over an M3 or a 996 C2 (no need for a C4S). A mate of mine just sold his SL500 & claimed the Ferrari 360 he previously owned was cheaper to run, something to keep in mind maybe?

would it be considered bad form to put the BBS LMS alloys on a C4S

I thought it would be hence the low prices they are getting over the SL350.

3.2 carrera coupe is all very nice for the weekend or special occasions, and likely to hold its value as not that many around but th 6t is one of the fastest cars point to point on a back road that you can buy. the same cannot be said about old 3.2l etc. by the way the 0-60, 0-100, 50-70, standing qaurter mile etc - there is not much difference in a 7t to a 6t... so facing the question of a £20k 6t over a 40k 7t... its a very fair judgement...

Lovely machine.

Driven one of a track day (was a tiptronic version) and it was quick.

Then went in a passenger ride in a 2004 996 Turbo manual, and fk me it was rapid!

Very cheap now at under £20k - not may cars can compare for the all round package.

Good points raised about the expensive bits and pieces to go wrong at that mileage, but you know what, you only live once: so live properly!

Doesn't really appeal to me, but it's interesting that they're dropping so low. Presumably the 996 is the cheapest generation of 911 by some margin? I wonder if the 997 will follow it.
Same here - outright speed isn't everything. A car needs soul and unfortunately it's something this car does not deliver.
Ahhhh, a TVR owner. That figures.
(You do know that breaking down does not equal 'soul'...)

smile

My 996 turbo has soul.
It is, in every way, a 911. Just as very fast one.

Not sure why so many say a 911 is soulless. OK, I can't argue against a persons opinion, but I can strongly disagree with it.

One of my favourite cars, with plenty of soul to get under your skin. Don't confuse effectiveness with a lack of character.
