Depends if you are talking quality, or reliability. Unreliability doesn't really exists anymore.
My daughter's Golf and sister's now sold Tiguan beg to differ. I had an old Golf GTI Mk III which was always going wrong, where old Ford's and Toyota's didn't.Same era Toyotas are reliable as hell, just as dull and plastically as hell too.
As for 1990s Fords.... I loved my Mondeo GLX company car in 1994, but they had the moniker of Fix Or Repair Daily for a reason

It was 10 years old at the time and I had a 10 year old Mondeo LX that never actually went wrong.Same era Toyotas are reliable as hell, just as dull and plastically as hell too.

The Golf was the only car, in 40 years that ever broke down and had to be recovered. If you think a 1996 GTI isn't dull and plasticky inside, you should look again.

I had a 1995 Golf Gti, from new for 2 years (replaced the Mondeo as a Co Car). 60,000 faultless mile. And yes, plasticy, but a league better than the Japanese cars of the era.

Always wanted one. it shows how much a badge helps, as if it was a vw would have sold like hotcakes yet people look down on Daihatsu.VW have released their fair share of uglies!
Agree on the Sirion, they were so cheap a few years ago and now you cant really find any.
I keep an eye on prices in Japan for the Storia x4, 800kg, 4wd and a 713cc with 120hp. However, prices are still very strong, I think the engine is forged and they were used for rallying iirc.
The Boon x4 replaced it though, its equally nuts
edit, there is a Rally 2 on Ebay for £1400
