Came up behind a Lancia Phedra, a kind of people carrier yesterday. I couldn't make the name out until we got into traffic.

That was a Fiat/Lancia/PSA joint venture (Fiat Ulysse, Citroen C8, Peugeot 807, collectively 'Eurovans').

Until I got chased* by one today I had never heard of a Volvo V90 D5 Powerpulse AWD 232hp.

  • I was trying to get home briskly after suffering multiple hold-ups on my way home and I think the Volvo driver interpreted it as me wanting to play but as it looked like a 'normal' car I thought nothing of it at the time, other than he was able to make surprisingly good progress.

Was it 'painted' blue & yellow in squares?

Mention of the hydrogen fuelled Mirai reminded me that, until a couple of weeks ago, I had no idea these existed, much less that they are available over here. Hyundai Nexo.
Not a bad looking thing but pricey.

Volkswagen SP2

Brazilian 'sports car', rear engined rear wheel drive, like a Porsche, crying out for an engine swap as they have a 1.7l aircooled boxer with a pathetic 75hp.

Weird and also cool looking but still not sure if its more weird or more cool?

The front reminds me of the 1960's Variant, which it should do really because there was an aircooled model called the SP2 back in the 60's. And it was based on the Variant. Is this as it was then or a new model? The styling looks very up to date if an original.

Unusual name and unusual car - with doors that slid horizontally into the body.
Apparently, the doors were unreliable so file under "Ideas that didn't work".
More here.
I'd never heard of it until one was used in The Man In The High Castle - clips on YouTube.
Saw this one on display at Watkins Glen. I had never seen or heard of one before.

That's original. It looks more like the Brazilian variant than the european/u.s variant. There's a hint of type 4 about the lights though.

I always liked the Brasillia as well which was only for south America and Portugal

That’s a good looking car. Would look even better with a grille.

Such a good looking car, love its minimalist design and proportions. Would be a dream sportscar if it had a SOHC boxer six.

First thought was the same, would be great with a flat 6 but the engine bay looks like a very cramped place

Alfa 1.7 boxer, BRZ / GT86 Subaru boxer, EJ Turbo Subaru boxer though?

Until today, this! By this I mean the Carlsson edition specifically. Proper head turner!

Far less work just to tune a VW flat 4, don't have to worry about radiators and the like. It'll be quicker as well

SAAB used the Carlsson name on very highly finished variants of both the 900 and the 9000 in the early 90s. They were named after Carl Carlsson who was a character in the then newly launched Simpsons cartoon series.

Subaru copied the idea with the Burns edition Impreza.

Cannot remember the exact year but they were introduced in late 80s.

I have a brochure for the first version of the 9000 Carlsson.

Just saw one of these in traffic today:

Lancia Kappa Coupé. Based on a shortened version of the Alfa 166 platform, and available with the Busso V6 or the Fiat 20V 5-cylinder turbo. Just over 3000 were built, essentially by hand.

I saw one of them a while back and posted it on Twitter to the general delight of the chodspotting community.

Speaking of Twitter, this is a genuine curiosity posted by Ash Sutcliffe. Can you guess what it is?

Nope, you're wrong. It's a Brilliance B8. There's a fascinating story behind it here --> http://chinacarhistory.com/2018/03/06/the-brillian...

There's been a couple on eBay recently that I "half" watched, out of interest. They seem to be around the £5000 mark for decent-looking ones (turbos, from memory - one of which had a 4 cylinder similar to a Delta Integrale).

Once the kids are old enough to walk to school I'd quite like one of these for the daily commute. They're a bit different.
