By the late 80's, German tuners Shultz would do you a 190E "City" - a 2.6 petrol 190E front end, shortened wheelbase and a W124 tail grafted to the back.
Love thatI have a vague recollection of seeing that photo before.. You can almost hear the 'Spandau Ballet' (Gold) coming out of the stereo - although her shoulder pads are wider than the seats.
Odd when you think about it, but it took Mercedes - the oldest car car maker - nearly 40 years to be build a Golf
( Yes I know that there wouldn't have been a business case for it in terms of production capacity, sales volume, return on investment in for a Merc of that size & price in the 70s and 80s. And when they did decide to get into that market you can admire the - perhaps misguided - imagination and innovation that went into the one-box A-Classes. So there must have been some humble pie when they sat down to design the 2011 A-Class and decided "We'll just do what everyone else is doing then" )

They wanted to reduce the average age of a Mercedes buyer when they started again on the A Class, hence doing the same as everyone else.( Yes I know that there wouldn't have been a business case for it in terms of production capacity, sales volume, return on investment in for a Merc of that size & price in the 70s and 80s. Suspect thats the badge, not the grill.
But this is the new crash protection. ALL manufacturers are going for big grills.
I can’t work out how a large grille would help in crash protection. Seems counterintuitive. But this is the new crash protection. ALL manufacturers are going for big grills.

Toyota Comfort, designed for use as a taxi cab in Japan which seems sensible enough.

But then TRD decided to supercharge it and make 59 of them. Bonkers the Japanese sometimes
Toyota did this with their Century flagship. This is the Century GRMN:...
