Hellbound, given your comment about fishtailing at 20MPH on manhole covers, perhaps it was a tyre or suspension alignment issue?

Heretic, so what driving style do they need? Slow in, fast out, accelerating some way past the apex or holding off until straight?
Slow in, fast out was what I found to be the best method. Giving it some throttle as you enter the corner hunkers the back end down quite nicely, so you just power out, (you just have to modulate that so you don't start reversing when you don't want to), gradually increasing theottle oit of the corner. Lifting off will give you some movement on the rear, it depending on the speed, angle, etc, will depend if you slide out or not. I had the Yokahama A046 tyres, 195 on the front, and 225 on the rear.

Interesting......
I'm surprised it's reached that mileage. The one I had was the most unreliable car I've ever owned and I've had cars that you expect to be unreliable!

Proper MR2 for shed money: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C311542

Look at the grey one posted earlier in the thread and then look at that, no comparison, the MK2 was just so much better looking, now I like the Mk1 but they arent a looker by any stretch imho.

You had a lemon - most NA MR2's are pretty solid.

absolutely love mine. i have a rev2, around 92,000 on the clock. after a 18 months it's only been routine servicing bits and pieces and these are all done at home bar the cambelt change (£250 from pacific works all in). hoot to drive but too noisy on long journeys. just gearing myself up to tackle the rocker gasket as there's a slight leak (probably caused by screws not being torqued correctly last time - a common problem).

brilliant on b-roads if you go slow in, fast out and don't overdo it with the lift-off oversteer and a boot big enough for a a long weekend away.

just have a good look around and make sure all the mechanicals are in order and even a leggy 3s-ge will pull well through the ratios.

I had a 93 UK N/A with 165000 miles on it and I believe it's still going strong today. With 16" wheels on it and T1R's or Eagle F1's and decent suspension it was brilliant. Upgraded the discs and pads, and had a K&N induction kit fitted. Dyno'd at 162bhp at the fly. It was a fantastic machine to drive and I plan to get a turbo version for fun soon. Loads of room in it for stuff when going away for weekends, and to me it always looked great with the larger wheels, and little touches like a smaller front plate and clear indicators etc.
I do not like the MK1 at all. Too boxy.
I found the posted vid amusing. The times reflected the price of the things today. GTR's and NSX's and Rx7's are all very expensive when performance is compared to a nice 2. SO you get a lot of car for the money. The shed one looks like a shed to me though. I thought all UK REV 2's had leather seats??

Go try one, you might like it.

Youngsters nowadays!

Had two new Mark 1s and one new Mark 2 myself; all three of them did near enough 50K miles in their first year.

When I got my turbo, I managed 25,000 or so miles that year. I worked away from home as well... For 6 months of the year. smile

I had 2 of these, I bought my first one when I was 20; one was a UK GT T-Bar and the other a standard UK car with sunroof. The first RWD cars I'd owned and a great learning curve on understanding car balance. At the time I was the envy of my mates as they were driving round in old Astra's/Golfs.

I loved them and must admit I still toy with the idea of getting one as a shed; I loved the short gear stick and high handbrake - they were perfectly positioned so you could rest your arm on the central tunnel on a long run. For the era they were really well specced and had a cracking stereo set up with 8 or 10 speakers (I replaced the head unit on both with Alpine/Pioneer multi disc unit - I seem to remember they had a funny earth set up for each speaker that meant it all had to be rewired??)

Oh bugger maybe I will get one.....

Riggers typed:

'Go for a slightly later version and you won't get the unruly handling, either. Toyota brought out a 'Revision 2' in 1992 with revised suspension geometry.'

What's the difference? Geometry implies more than just shocks and springs?

Not sure on all the differences, but Rev2 had 15inch alloys and wider rear tyres (225 instead of 205 iirc?) with 195 fronts, bigger brakes, and different camber / toe / caster settings. IIRC, the caster is adjustable on a stock Rev1, not on a Rev2+. I am not sure of any other mechanical differences with the suspension.

Great cars, had a 1996 Rev 3 UK car for 2 years, bought it for a grand, put a set of tyres on it and changed a wheel bearing in the time I had it, and sold it on for 925 quid a couple of weeks ago. Bangernomics and great fun at the same time!

Not quite as tidy as this one but only had 133k on it. After this feature reckon I'd have got another few hundred quid if I'd held on to it... Lad who bought it got a good deal I reckon.

Memory fades, but I seem to recollect that Lotus had a hand with sorting it out, such as (as above) the rear tyre being a wider profile than the fronts etc.
