Exactly my thoughts.

I would want a turbo one.
For £900?! Good luck with that.

(Says the man who bought a £1000 Impreza Turbo and blew it up a week later hehe)

Driven several versions of both MX5 & MR2, can't say the MR2 came close to the handling precision of the MX5.

The MK2 MR2 was widely mocked due to its handling, where as the MX5 is globally known as a drivers car.
Watch the video I posted above and let us know what you think.....

The MX5 was mocked for years as a girls car and has now (finally) been recognised as a great sportscar. Just goes to show that the general man on the street knows nothing about cars and they can be given unfair reputations.
That wasn't a dig at the MX5, I used to own one.

But at the same time a mate had a mk2 MR2 which just felt sharper. Granted, I only drove it in the dry and it was subtly modified (nothing dramatic; things like geometry and careful tyre choice...) but I expected my MX5 to run rings round it, and it didn't.

I'd still go for an MX5 out of the two as I quite like lazy, accessible oversteer in a road car, but the MR2 had more of an edge to it and I can imagine that being fun on the track.

Anyway, even including the MX5, the list of sports car which are genuinely attainable for £1k - getting back to my original point - is still pretty small, particularly if you want RWD.

For those who believe the motoring press - watch this video....MR2 (Rev3 Turbo) Vs RX7 Vs Skyline GTR Vs Supra Vs NSX at Tsukuba

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFEi-0Rx6J0

The MR2 Rev3 Turbo is fast and handles really well compared to these other cars that are more widely lauded.

The result of the video? MR2 shoots off the line into the lead and stays there until the end.

what the hell - pic we time.........

This is stunning, what wheels are those?

I want to just add my 2p to this discussion. I recently picked one of these up as a cheap bit of fun and I am so far very happy with it. Mine is a rev 2, g-limited, with just over 100k miles on the clock. It pulls strong, handles gret when pushed and the driving position feels superb. Averall I think it is a great buy for sub £1000
To compare, my father has a mk2 mx-5 on a 54 plate, and although it is also great fun, it seams to lack the outright power and grunt of the mr2.

A friend bought a £396.89 one of these for hill climbs and sprints three years ago. His girlfriend(now wife)took it over. The following is not meant to about girl/woman diver, but she was very scary in this. I have on more than a dozen occasion seen her sides in this and once do a full spin (intended). She plans to start using this for sprint next year. I better she will be good!

Love my rev4 NA. Not amazingly fast but its quick enough and handles well enough to put a huge smile on your face.
And I don't know of many other cars you can pick up for around a grand and use properly that have such a similar "special" factor.

Looks tidy for its miles, don't know the underneath but obviously someones tried to keep it clean and straight. The steering wheel would have to go though, I've seen moon mile mini cabs at 5am with wheels in nicer knick than that! But I'm just being picky. few hundred quid for a mid engined psuedo Ferrari that generally cost next to nothing to run...what not to like about that!

I was going to say exactly the opposite. Any tips on companies that would competitively insure a rev2/3 turbo? Cheapest quote I've had so far is £1k via the comparison sites.

Have to agree with you blackbeast. I was initially looking for a turbo but was getting quotes around the £1k mark. Insured my current imported n/a for less than £400

Try A-Plan, Sky or Classicline.

Back when I was running mine, Adrian Flux asked the same price for the turbo as they did for the NA, if you had MR2DC membership. Might be worth seeing of the MR2DC has a plan of that ilk running with someone.

Quite liked the MR2's back in the days, still do to be honest. Never got to drive the MK1 though. A chap on a forum recently purchased a mint Mk1 one, with low miles............ and supercharged! The 'charger was standard and those models are rare. May explain why it set him back nearly £8k!

I was quoted around 1k as well but to me that's cheaper than other Japanese turbo cars. Flux had been the best with £850 iirc. I'm 22 with 2 years ncb.

Remember, with the turbo you are looking at a car capable of a sprint to 60 in the low 5's, and a decent top speed.

Electro-hydraulic I'd imagine. Still basically hydraulically assisted.

Rev1, rev2, etc, is like mk1, mk2 and so on, but for a certain incarnation. A rev5 BEAMs was a rare thing need. Lovely car.
