I have 21s and find the ride quality pretty good provided the road surface is in reasonable condition. That translates to near limo ride quality in Berkshire and bloody awful ride quality in and around Glasgow!

It's certainly no worse than the 19s I had on my previous 5 series although the same caveat applies - if your suspension is on its way out the larger rims will hasten its demise and highlight any weakness.
Where are the smooth roads in Berkshire? I haven't noticed any? Im normally too busy dodging potholes..
Take a trip up north and you'll think yourself lucky! tongue out

Haha, thanks for the few knowledgeable replies, and not so many thanks to the piss takers biggrin

AMG fit 19's as standard on the facelift model, so 20's aren't out of the question, would like to see some pics first though smile

My XJR is on original 20" 5 spoke style alloys.

Ride is still good and the bigger look of the wheels fills the wheel arches well.

Not really noticed any issues with tramling except when I somehow occasionally find myself on the inside lane of the M4 where all the lorries have grooved the surface, but I assume that effects most cars.

I like them. smile

ETA to add pic of one that looks like mine as the OP wanted pics.

It's not so much the size as the weight. I have 20s on my Mustang but they are simple 5 spokes and very light - you can lift a 10.5" rim with one finger. However, tyres are heavy and even with light wheels, the 275/35 tyres (as profile is a function of width, the lowest profile in terms of retaining comfort will depend on width to some degree) add about 10lbs weight per corner over the standard wheel set-up. I have adjustable dampersto compensate for that to a degree and I don't fing the ride massively different.

I don't find any great problem with tramlining either but much depends on the suspension setup, wheel offset and state of your local roads.

Here are drug-dealer 20's on my old sl55!

obviously its down to personal preference but the vast majority would agree that standard wheels on certain performance cars were not always the best-looking, classic example being the e46 M3 - it looked hideous with the original 18's IMO

Have your tried Google images for "20 inch rims"?

Erm.... pahahahaha! (yes, I know some of these aren't 20 inches)

I hope you do realise there's a world of difference between a car with firm springing (and damping) - and one which rides like st due to zero sidewall compliance and a quarter tonne of unsprung mass per corner...
Saved me typing it. Almost every car fan I've spoken to thinks a firmer ride=better handling. We can thank 'S-Line' for that I think! Was explaining just today to a mate at work how I'm going to make my old BMW handle the way I want, straight away he said "eighteens!?" like there was some sort of inevitability to it. No- 16s for me. And a new pair of anti-roll bars, decent 55 profile tyres and some new suspension bushes.

+1. Go to Scotland to get a new perspective. I swear there are actual caves developing in some parts of Glasgow. Keep expecting to see bears appear out after a long hibernation, or god forbid, the Morlocks who we all know are down there, waiting...

You see, the M3 looks fantastic to me but the SL does not suit the Halfords alloys at all. An SL is about refined comfort and performance, putting oversized wheels on to spoil the ride just seems silly. You're in the wrong car if thats what you're after.

Google carlsson 1/16 ultralight.

Have these on my sl55. On mobile at the mo and can't get photobucket link to Work so you can see them on my car. Great wheel - fills the arches out nicely and ride not too harsh.

I'll post a piccy when I'm back on the pc smile

Ok thanks Jayzee.

Benzito, yes I agree the M3 could look much better.

I like the SL pic, has that been lowered though?

According to my calculations the difference in sidewall depth between the 285's for a 19 or 20" wheel will be around 14.25mm, the 20's having a 71.25mm wall which sounds ok to me.

I've been to Scotland, but blasted past Glasgow (why would I want to go there???)... Highland roads were almost heaven on earth... And the roads in and around Blackpool, Lancs, North Wales etc are all far, far better than the tarmac around here...

That style of modification using oversized wheels is called 'Donk'.

Just do you know for future conversations! smile

Here they are...

Give up with photobucket as I cannot upload new images!

Here are pictures from the previous owner when he was selling the car - they're not brilliant, but you get the idea:

My XKR is on 20" wheels and to be honest if it wasn't for the brembo brakes I'd be considering looking for some 18"s. The 20" are fine on a perfectly smooth road but I find they make the ride a bit harsh and I also blame the lack of side wall for the less progressive break away characteristics. They are also very sensitive to alignment, poor settings can lead to tramlining.

On the plus side they look good and mean that the big diameter discs and brembo calipers fit but is this a price worth paying for a worse ride quality on the ever deteriorating UK roads
