Discussion
I've just read Autocar and they mention the new A250 AMG Sport as a competitor to the 125i & GTI, its also priced about £26,000

looks a lot better too. I can't believe the bangle era was slated so much when you see what bmw and audi now look like. Even vauxhall's are looking better nowadays.http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/first-drives/f...
I'm reviving this post because of this, which made me think:
Linky here. Delivery mileage only car for £22390.
Granted, it's got a cloth interior and some drivers will look down on the auto, and it's no M135i, but at £22-and-a-bit thousand it makes a new Golf GTi look very expensive.

Certainly seems to be the cheapest of the trio but then its been on sale for the longest. The A250 seems to start from about 26k on the used market or a nearly new example, and the GTI runs in at just under 24k for a 5dr with Nav. Linky here. Delivery mileage only car for £22390.

That does surprise me; I thought one would have a hell of a time getting a discount off a Mk7 GTi for a few more months. The car I've highlighted is also a pre-registered car, which I'm sure comes into it when you're trying to compare. Mind you, I can't afford any of the options so it's wild speculation my part, I'm afraid! Maybe in a couple of years, mortgage notwithstanding.

Hello, is there anyone still listening?
Blearyeyedgirl and I were hoping to test drive a used 125i (3 years after the post above! ) but it was sold before we could go to see it. It was, and remains, unloved by the masses but intriguing as an alternative to a Golf GTi.
If I ever actually get to test drive one, I'll feed back about it.

Am I okay to do a holy thread resurrection?
Just in case anyone wants any info now these cars are a bit older/ available at a much cheaper price.
I purchased a manual 125i on a whim a month or so ago.
2013 plate, 75k miles, Full service history.
I paid £6k and with £500ish spent on cosmetics (have had the wheels done/ need a new tailgate) it will be a very nice car.
So, probably about £4-5k cheaper than the equivalent 135i.
It is a fantastic little thing. Feels like a very grown up GTI and is fun to drive. The engine is also nice, a very dull sounding unit, but pretty free revving and you get a bit of turbo woosh with the windows down, if you like that sort of thing. It shifts as well.
From what I have learned, the least attractive thing with these is the N20 engine, it's main Achilles heel being the timing chain guides which deteriorate over time. From what I have read, most of the time, there is a bit of a warning, slackness/noise/engine codes. If you notice this, Get the timing chain done ASAP or you risk grenading your engine. However, this is not to say it won't grenade at any point without any warning, there are instances of this happening.
Sounds like a tempting buy, right? Well...I guess with any car, if you read everything on the internet, you'd never buy anything as there is always something that "might happen".
Fortunately, my example makes no noise at all (touch wood) so I am confident that it will keep purring away (noisy injectors aside, which is perfectly normal) with regular oil changes, which is highly recommended with this engine as well as switching off Auto start/ stop.
The N20 engine was replaced with the B engine in 2015 facelift form, this does not have timing chain issues.
MPG is ok, but not far off a 135i, however, handling maybe a little sweeter with a lighter 4 cylinder up front as opposed to a 6.
So, to sum up, buy a 135i lol. Unless you can get a 125i cheap enough that has proof of being well looked after and no timing chain noise.
